2014 Triumph Thunderbird Commander
Triumph targets what it calls the “fat custom” segment with its new 2014 Thunderbird Commander. Dimension changes create a bigger ride that boasts improved power and torque over the baseline Thunderbird. Triumph sourced the liquid-cooled DOHC Parallel Twin found in the Triumph Storm for the Commander and the 1699cc mill yields a claimed 93 horsepower and 111 lb-ft of torque. The Commander sports multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection, six-speed gearbox, wet multi-plate clutch and chromed twin-skin stainless steel 2-1-2 exhaust system.
Though longer, wider and taller than its baseline counterpart for the 2014 model year, the Commander’s seat height remains the same at 27.5 inches. It gets wide 140/75 ZR17 front and 200/50 ZR17 rear tires and two 17-inch cast aluminum five-spoke rims.
A Showa 43mm fork handles suspension out front while twin Showa shocks with five position adjustable preload soak up bumps out back. The Commander comes with footboards made of high-pressure die-cast aluminum which feature replaceable skidplates and an adjustable heel/toe gear lever. At 767 pounds (claimed wet weight) the Commander outweighs the standard Thunderbird by 20 pounds.
The 2014 Thunderbird Commander will be available in authorized Triumph dealers by Spring 2014 in either Lava Red/Crimson Sunset or Phantom Black/Storm Grey colorways. MSRP is yet to be determined.
Triumph Thunderbird LT
The 2014 Thunderbird LT is also powered by the 1699cc version of Triumph’s liquid-cooled Parallel Twin. Styling and touring amenities set the LT apart, however. The LT comes with a pair of removable leather saddlebags, auxiliary spot lamps, white-walled radial tires and wire, 56-spoke rims.
Ergonomics were tweaked to make all-day/multi-day rides more enjoyable and the LT comes with updated foam padding in the seat, lumbar support and detachable windscreen. Seat height is the same 27.5 inches as the Commander. White piping around the seat and chrome embellishments throughout adds to the LT’s classic style. The handlebars are slightly raised and sweep back for a comfortable riding position. The LT also gets rider and pillion foot-boards with replaceable skid-plates and an adjustable heel/toe lever for the rider.
The LT rings in at a claimed 837 pounds and is set to be available Spring 2014. Color options include Caspian Blue/Crystal White or Lava Red/Phantom Black. MSRP information is yet to be announced.
