We love the name of David Polgreen’s 1966 Shovel called ‘Miami Vice,’ the throwback-styled digger good enough to earn first place in the Ultimate Builder Freestyle Class in Minneapolis.
Eldon Haas’ ‘Twister’ was another strong competitor in the Freestyle Class, earning second place for the twisted-up 2011 chopper.
It was a tight competition in Minneapolis’ Mod Harley Class as Pete Mason’s 1940 Knucklehead edged out Jason Schulberg’s ’54 Panhead by a single point.

You heard it right. An AWD 2013 KTM 350 won first place in the Performance Custom Class in Minnesota, a first for the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Shows.
The J&P Cycles’ Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show headed to Minneapolis, MN last weekend for the eighth round of competition. Custom builders beat the winter blues by showcasing their latest creations inside the warmth of the Minneapolis Convention Center. SHO DOG winners for the Minnesota round were Huenly Choppers that received a Garage Leathers solo bag for their promotional efforts while Hable Racing won a Rocking K Custom Leathers chain wallet. People’s Choice Award winner Mean Machine Cycle Parts received a custom Bell Helmet pinstriped by Skratch.
It was the invasion of the ‘70s as diggers and choppers rolled into the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show’s Minneapolis edition January 17-19 to compete in the heralded Freestyle Class. Many of the guys had ridden their sleds out to Born Free and some of them still had the road grime from this past summer. The sleds looked as good as the guys sporting the Duck Dynasty beards.
You could tell Cabin Fever had hit the city because the lines were long getting into the venue and the show was shoulder-to-shoulder with enthusiasts. Or it could have been that once inside the warm confines no one wanted to brave the -13 degree weather outside.
David Polgreen of The Wretched Hive rolled in ‘Miami Vice,’ a ‘70s era digger-style sled, to grab top honors in the FreeStyle class. It featured an original chromoly Arlen Ness frame with a six-inch stretch, extended vintage Ness Springer and super rare magnesium Kimtab wheels. The gas tank and fender were molded to the frame and the oil tank was hidden in the fender. The ’66 Shovel featured custom exhaust with handmade pentagram tips.

Pete Mason brought in his Full Tilt Boogie-built 1940 H-D Knucklehead and took the win in the MOD Harley class by edging out Jason Schulberg’s 1954 H-D Panhead by a single point. The bikes looked outstanding. Mason’s ‘Earl’ modified bobber featured a stock frame teamed to a stock 6 1cubic-inch engine. Paint was applied by Micheal Geltz.

TJ Designs brought in a bike named Craig and rolled out the $1000 winner in the Retro Mod class in Minneapolis. It’s a 1978 Shovelhead that features a 23-inch front wheel, shaved fork legs, percolator oil sight glass and glass air cleaner.

In the Performance Custom class, the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Shows experienced a first – an AWD motorcycle on a KTM 350 platform. Reports indicated that this performance bike always gets a holeshot and is excellent in snow, mud and soft sand. Features AWD dual A-arm suspension, anti-dive and coordinated wheel braking.
