Chop Doc Choppers rolled in ‘Ol 48,’ a custom 2013 board tracker, into the Detroit Ultimate Builder show and rolled out with the $2500 check for first prize in the Freestyle Class.
The ‘Firehouse Racer’ by Hoosier Daddy Choppers features cool refashioned antiques like 1920s fire hose brass nozzles as exhaust tips and a 1910 Jose Lucas Carbide headlight.
Wendell Turner’s 1981 Ironhead Sportster earned top honors in the Retro Mod class of the J&P Detroit Ultimate Builder Show.
This sharp-looking 1987 FZR1000 was a family affair, with Shannon Best’s son and daughter all contributing to the project.
A bored-out 1975 CB400F earned David Bowman the top prize in the Mod Street class in Detroit’s Ultimate Builder contest.
All participating builders in the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Novi, Michigan took home a J&P T-shirt and helmet bag. The “People’s Choice” winner in Detroit was “Bone Dragger” from Keith Lafer of Classic and Exotic, who won a Bell Custom 500 helmet. The top 15 winners won a HelmetLok and a Metal Rescue product. Shannon Best won the “SHO DOG” award and received a Rocking K Leather custom chain wallet while Evan Edwards of Plymouth Cycle and Speed took home a Garage Leathers’ solo bag for his efforts at the show.
Ron Harris of Chop Docs rolled in “Ol’ 48” in and everyone knew this was the bike to beat. It is a 2013 board tracker featuring a 95” Pan/Twin Cam with two front cylinder heads and a Pan top end. The bike is white with clear-coat copper accents. It’s all handcrafted with an old-school Hurst pistol grip jockey shift.

MOD Harley Class
Hoosier Daddy Chopper’s Firehouse Racer is “the” machine in the MOD Harley class as it was the bike to beat in this class. It features a Harley-Davidson 96 cubic-inch Twin Cam engine with an S&S Carb and hand-fabricated exhaust tips complete with 1920s fire hose brass nozzles. An Ultima 2-inch belt drive puts power to the rear. Illumination comes from a 1910 Jose Lucas Carbide headlight and an After Hours Choppers taillight. The leather seat is from Anvil Customs.

Wendell Turner of Turners Cycle Shop brought in “Hung Low,” a 1981 custom Sportster and took the point in the Retro MOD class. The bike features a 1000cc Ironhead overhead-valve engine with cast iron heads and a hand-built drop seat on a six-inch stretched hardtail. Paint by Chop Docs Choppers.

Shannon Best’s “Ronin” is a family project with both son and daughter adding their elbow grease to make the 1987 Yamaha FZR 1000 really stand out. Their hard work earned 1st place in the Performance Custom class. The bike has been lowered and stretched six-inches. It features plenty of handmade and polished parts. The 1000cc mill includes a short exhaust and ported and polished heads.

Dave Bowman took 1st place in MOD Street with his slick 1975 Honda CB400F. The Café Racer features a custom seat cowl, aluminum Excel wheel, and retro paint from Steve Stroud. The engine has been pumped up to 480cc using a Yoshimura big bore kit.
