The Tenere’s electronic suspension system is similar to the one that debuted on the 2014 Yamaha FJR1300 ES. Suspension settings can be manipulated with buttons on the handlebar allowing the rider to toggle between four preload settings and three general damping modes, with the ability to fine-tune damping via several more settings. The electronic suspension, standard heated grips and a special textured rider and passenger seat are what set the ES apart from its base model sibling, and command its $1100 MSRP premium.
Cruise control comes standard for both 2014 Tenere models along with engine updates. Engineers re-mapped the shaft-driven Tenere’s 1199cc Parallel Twin with modest power gains claimed of two horsepower and a half lb-ft of torque. Yamaha reps promise the real benefit isn’t peak production, but instead a more rider-friendly powerband. The Super Ten’s two throttle maps return, with the ‘S’ (sport) and ‘T’ (touring) drive mode settings modified to net a bigger difference in engine response when either mode is engaged.
Further updates to both Tenere models include a new side stand and top clamp that allows the rider to adjust the position of the handlebar. In its stock setting, the bar is 10mm higher and 10mm further back which Yamaha claims equates to a more natural feel. Other ergonomic enhancements include a reshaped and height adjustable windscreen. Adjustment can be made manually, without tools, but does require subtle hand movements making it necessary to dismount the motorcycle. The 2014 models also source a more modern-looking digital instrument display, as well as LED turn signals.
The base model Tenere will be available in April and offered in two colorways, Yamaha Blue and Matte Gray/Black. The ES version will arrive in May and be offered only in the Matte Gray/Black option.
