The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall notice on behalf of BMW North America. The affected 2013 models are the C600 Sport, C650GT, F700GS, F800GS, F800GS Adventure, F800GT, R1200R and R1200GS. The recall notice states that “water may enter the side-stand switch preventing the motorcycle from starting or potentially shutting off the motorcycle while it is being ridden.” There are potentially 4453 units affected.

According to the Defect Notice submitted to the NHTSA on February 14, 2014, BMW estimates that 100% of the motorcycles in the affected range are subject to the condition. The notice goes on to explain that:

“After a tooling change at the side-stand switch supplier was introduced, the switch housing was not produced to specification. As a result, during vigorous washing of the scooter/motorcycle, or riding in very wet conditions, it is possible for water to enter the side-stand switch.”

The first indication of the issue was discovered on July 2, 2013 during “an internal durability test” of a C600 Sport Maxi Scooter in which the engine shut off mid-ride. The side-stand switch provider investigated and concluded, on September 12, 2013, that its tooling change had caused the issue. To-date BMW has not received any report of an accident or injury owing to the defect.

BMW plans to notify owners of affected models and dealers have been instructed to replace the side-stand switch for free. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.
