As with previous GNCCs, the weather played a key role in determining the condition of the 11- mile track. Dry and sunny weather gave way to a large rain storm which soaked the track an hour prior to the race making for a wet and slippery racetrack – and then came the heat and humidity.
“This was the first really hot and humid race of the year,” explained Mullins. “The track was really technical after the downpour before the start. I rode solid all day and made few mistakes. It feels good to win two in a row and maintain the lead in the series.”
Fresh off her GEICO EnduroCross win, Kacy Martinez was back on top the women’s podium with another GNCC win. “I didn’t get a good jump off the start, but by the second turn I was in the lead! Since we are the first row and I was leading, I was the first one into the new single track section! It was very fun and I believe I was able to break away from there!”
Honorable mention goes out to Husqvarna’s Andrew DeLong, who finished sixth in the XC1 Class, and Maxxis/KLIM/DirtWise/KTM race team’s Jesse Groemm, who finished fourth in the XC2 Class. Craig DeLong captured another win in the 250 A class and earned the Top Amateur Award with thirteenth overall for the day.
The next round of the AMSOIL GNCC Series takes place May 24 and 25 in Masontown, WV. For more information on the series visit www.gnccracing.com.
