Byron's sure to be hunched over a laptop after the checkers are flown, caught in his own little version of heaven. Whether on dirt, street or a combination of both, MotoUSA's newest addition knows the only thing better than actually riding is telling the story of how things went down.

RoadRace Factory’s Jake Gagne earned his first AMA Pro Daytona SportBike win of the season in Race 1 at Road America. Yamaha Extended Service’s Garrett Gerloff finished in second-place followed by his teammate, JD Beach, in third.

Gagne shot off the start to take the lead in the opening turns, but was pursued closely by Gerloff and Yamalube Westby Racing’s Dane Westby. Behind, Castrol Triumph’s Jason DiSalvo, Latus Motors’ Bobby Fong, Riders Discount Racing’s Danny Eslick and Beach bunched up to remain in the hunt for podium position as well. It proved to be a sour day for Triumph riders though, as Fong was forced to head back to the pits early in the contest with a clutch issue and later Eslick crashed out. In addition to the two lead-pack riders, D&D Cycles Triumph rider Steve Rapp also crashed out and DiSalvo’s teammate, Elena Myers, pulled out of the race late with a brake reservoir issue.

With Eslick and Fong out of the mix, DiSalvo, Westby and Beach battled for third as Gagne built a gap on the field in the lead. Gerloff held steady in second but eventually faced a challenge from the three, four and five riders as they closed in. Westby was first to get the best of the Yamaha rider, taking over second-place three laps in. Beach had moved ahead of DiSalvo and was in the podium mix as well. Westby remained strong in second while Beach challenged Gerloff for third, eventually moving ahead of his teammate mid-race. Beach turned on the jets after that and closed in on Westby as well to fight for second position, but then a red flag a few laps from the finish brought the field back to the pits.

Three laps remained at the restart, and off the second start MotoSport.com’s Jake Lewis ran through the opening turns in the lead. Gagne was right there though and pushed back to the front during the opening lap. Gerloff and Lewis swapped position for second a few times while behind Westby, Disalvo and Beach looked for ways to get on the box. Westby staged a late charge and made it up to the runner-up spot but on the final lap his engine blew, leaving him stranded on the side of the track just a few corners from the finish. Gerloff slipped easily into second while Beach managed to claw his way back up into podium position just before the checkers.

Lewis crossed the line in fourth followed by DiSalvo in fifth. GN Gonzales Racing’s Blake Young earned sixth-place ahead of Gagne’s teammate, Tomas Puerta, in seventh. Kyle Wyman Racing’s Kyle Wyman finished in eighth while Team H35’s Benny Solis and Tuned Racing’s Bryce Prince took the ninth and 10th spots, respectively.

Gagne goes into the final day of racing at Road America with the points lead, ahead of Gerloff in second and Eslick in third. Lewis sits fourth while Wyman is fifth.
