Dane Westby grabbed his first Daytona SportBike double victory at Barber Motorsports Park.

Yamalube Westby Racing’s Dane Westby took a hard-fought win in AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Race 2 at Barber, earning his first ever double victory in the class. MotoSport.com’s Jake Lewis finished second followed by RoadRace Factory’s Jake Gagne in third.

Westby slotted into fifth off the start behind Lewis, Gagne, Castrol Triumph’s Jason DiSalvo and Latus Motors’ Bobby Fong. Gagne started to push his way up the field, getting past DiSalvo early and then on Lap 2 dispatching Lewis for the lead. DiSalvo reclaimed second when Lewis ran wide and was able to hold there for a period before Lewis answered back. Positions shuffled numerous times as the lead pack grew to include Yamaha Extended Service’s JD Beach as well, with Gagne commanding the front by a slim margin.

Halfway through the race Westby began his charge up the ranks, making quick work of Fong and DiSalvo. Westby pushed ahead of Lewis by Lap 15 and started pressuring Gagne hard for the lead. On Lap 16 Westby made his first move to the front but was unable to shake Gagne or Lewis, the two riders hungry for the race win.

Entering the final lap Westby, Gagne, Lewis and Fong were tightly packed and Fong attempted a move up the ladder but made a mistake and went off track into the gravel at the Museum turn. The incident gave Westby a little breathing room but put Lewis and Gagne in close quarters in the battle for second. Lewis eventually prevailed, taking the runner-up spot by a fraction of a second.

DiSalvo finished in fourth followed by Beach in fifth. Beach’s teammate, Garrett Gerloff, was unable to start Race 2 after suffering a broken wrist in his crash the previous day. Riders Discount’s Danny Eslick finished in sixth followed by GN Gonzales Racing’s Blake Young in seventh and GEICO Motorcycle Racing’s Jake Zemke in eighth.

Gagne continues to lead the series with Eslick trailing 12 points back in second. Lewis sits third followed by Beach and Westby in fourth and fifth, respectively.
