2015 Suzuki GSX-S1000 Streetfighter Spied

Suzuki is ready to join the 1000cc streetfighter ranks with its GSX-S1000 – a naked standard based off its GSX-R1000. Spied during a photo shoot in the US, the new GSX-S1000 should make its official debut in the forthcoming weeks or, potentially, at an upcoming bike show this fall.


The new design, which sports GSX-S1000 badging on its half-fairing, is powered by a liquid-cooled Inline Four. The engine is sourced, presumably, from the GSX-R1000 (999cc displacement, 74.5mm bore x 57.3mm stroke). The Gixxer Superbike engine was last updated in 2012, where it received new pistons and cams. In stock trim the ’12 GSX-R engine turned the MotoUSA dyno up to 151.56 horsepower and 73 lb-ft torque. However, the new GSX-S1000’s exhaust exits out a low-slung, right-side canister – a stark contrast to the 2014 GSX-R’s bulky right-side muffler.

Running gear for the S1000 includes an inverted fork and radial-mount Brembo calipers. The bike spied testing also exhibits an ABS sensor on the front and rear wheels. An aluminum frame and swingarm are utilized, but the GSX-S1000 frame contours don’t appear to match the GSX-R frame – or at least the 2014 version.

The GSX-S1000 will deliver a more upright riding stance than its Gixxer kin, courtesy of a standard-style handlebar rather than sportbike clip-ons. Its streetfighter pretentions are evident in the styling as well, although the S1000 incorporates more bodywork in its design than Suzuki’s skimpy SFV650 middleweight (formerly known as the Gladius). The new Suzuki is wrapped in a half-fairing, as well as a sharp, angular bellypan beneath the four header pipes – the overall styling somewhat reminiscent of Kawasaki’s Z1000.

This new Suzuki fills a hole in its current lineup, as the company has not had a large-displacement streetfighter in America for a number of years. Previous models include the Bandit 1250 and the B-King, with the latter model a naked version of the Hayabusa that was soon dropped from the Suzuki lineup after its 2008 debut and remembered more for its controversial styling than its freakish road performance.

While expanding the Suzuki lineup, this new GSX-S1000 enters a crowded market segment. Suzuki’s latest model will square off against fellow Japanese entries from Kawasaki (Z1000), Honda (CBR1000R) and Yamaha (FZ-1 and FZ-09). The liter-class streetfighter segment also includes several popular European models, including the BMW S1000R, Aprilia Tuono V4R, Triumph Speed Triple, KTM Super Duke 1290R, Ducati Monster 1200 and MV Agusta Brutale 1090 RR.
