TORC President BJ Birtwell and The Buffalo Chip’s Rod ‘Woody’ Woodruff torch the ribbon on The Chip’s new Powersports Complex.
Sturgis Buffalo Chip owner Rod “Woody” Woodruff and TORC – The Off Road Championship President BJ Birtwell torched the ribbon at the new Buffalo Chip Powersports Complex, bringing a new dimension to the Sturgis Rally. With cameras of an NBC-affiliate rolling, the two solidified a relationship that’s in the first year of a long-term contract.
“There’s good energy and good buzz surrounding this track,” said Woodruff.
The impressive track was designed by TORC specialist Jeff Nordstrom. The 1.2-mile dirt track has been carved into the hill behind The Buffalo Chip, follows the natural terrain with steep ascents, sharp curves and nigh-blind crests. The way the track sits on the hill makes for great vantage points. It also means racers will get the rare opportunity for a land-rush, drop-in start.
TORC President BJ Birtwell said it’s a good design for the series and the layout is more technical than some tracks.
Rod ‘Woody’ Woodruff gets interviewed by NBC during the ribbon cutting of The Chip’s new Powersports Complex which will host two rounds of TORC racing during the 2014 Sturgis Rally.
The roar of 900+horsepower engines filled the air today as the first round of a TORC double-header christened the new track. Morning rains made it a dirt-slinging affair as Chad Hord was able to hold off CJ Greaves for the victory in Pro 2, with Steve Barlow crossing the line third. In Pro 4, Number 2 ranked Mark Jenkins beat Johhny Greaves by 1.421 seconds to capture the victory and write his name in the record books as the first big winner at The Buffalo Chip’s new track. Pit crews will be busy tonight as tomorrow the flag drops to do it all over again.
The addition of the TORC series is just the tip of the iceberg for The Buffalo Chip’s Powersports Complex. Yesterday saw the Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pulls, Thursday brings the Nitro National Pro Hill Climbs, and this weekend features Extreme Dirt Track ATV Races. Woodruff already has his eye on possible events for the future. When asked if he’s considering using the track besides when the rally is going on, Woodruff said it’s still up in the air.
