Yamaha’s recently introduced FZ-09 is currently the most popular motorcycle in the Japanese manufactures line-up. Eager to build on sales momentum it’s introducing a purpose-built touring machine in the FJ-09 ($10,490).
Powered by an identical version of Yamaha’s playful 847cc liquid-cooled Triple, the FJ drinks fuel from a larger capacity 4.8-gallon fuel cell extending range. Power is transferred to a full-size 180-series Dunlop D222 touring tire via a six-speed transmission and chain final drive.
The twin-spar aluminum chassis was also borrowed from the FZ, however the ‘J’ designation adds a giant (and three-way adjustable, without tools) windscreen and hard guards, as well as a broader rider and passenger seat. The FJ allows the rider to modify the position of the handlebar (forward and backward by 10mm), as well as seat height (15mm). A center stand was installed to ease routine maintenance. On the scales the FJ is claimed to weigh 462 pounds—a 48 pound increased compared to the naked version.
Both the forward and side fairings are new and designed to better shield the rider from wind buffeting on the highway. A pair of powerful LED headlamps are also neatly integrated into the front fairing. A slick-looking multifunction LCD (similar in design to the Super Tenere) comes standard allowing the rider to choose between three engine/throttle maps, as well as traction control. A pair of 12-volt power plugs are nestled in front of the display and can be used to power/charge electronic devices while riding.
The FJ can be further customized through Yamaha’s accessories catalog with hard luggage cases, an ever larger windscreen, heated grips and a premium ‘comfort’ seat. The new bike is scheduled to arrive at dealers this December and will be available in Matte Gray and Candy Red colorways.
