Metzeler steps up to the plate in the B group with its Sportec M5 Interact tire. Introduced five years ago the Sportec was recently updated with a new D-Spec dualcompound rear variation. Like before, the Metzeler features an intricate tread design modeled after the Greek letter Pi. It also includes neat but shallow lean indicators to monitor your cornering progress during fast-paced canyon rides.

In the shopping cart, the M5 ranks on the opposite end of the budget-oriented Shinkos with a retail price of $425.73 a set. That’s $103.83 more than the Verge 2X but only $8.11 more than the 3D Ultra Supersport by Avon.

Weight-wise the front hoop was the heaviest of the quartet – weighing almost a pound more than the Bridgestone BT-016 and around 11 ounces more than the Shinko and Avon. Conversely, the back shoe was easily the lightest weighing 1.1 pounds less than its next lightest competitor (Avon). Combined, the scales tipped the least for Metzeler giving it maximum points in that category.

Although the German tires weren’t as agile as the Bridgestone BT-016 or the Ultra Supersport they were predictable and far superior to the awkward-feeling Shinko. Although offering loads of grip and stability, the compound and/or carcass is more rigid-feeling and doesn’t deliver the same level of soft gummy road feel as the Avon.

Specifically designed as an all-weather, all-purpose sport tire, it’s no surprise the Sportec shined in the ‘Warm-Up Time’ category arriving at its operating temperature the fastest on the Big Track, and overall. Though to be fair the tires were run during the hottest track conditions on Day 1. The following day, at the Streets course, where they were run first thing in the morning, they ranked second in warm-up time – 6.8 seconds behind the Avon Ultra Supersports.

At the Big Track the Metzeler’s recorded the secondfastest time of the day with a lap time of 1’33.2—1.4 seconds off the Ultra Supersport. At the Streets course, however, the Sportec tied the Bridgestone BT-016 Pro with a best time of 1’24.5. When combined, the Ultra Supersports bested the M5s by just 0.7 seconds.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to hold Metzeler back from the top spot with it taking top scores in four of eight categories. Sure, they are a little spendy, but that extra cash buys extra grip. For riders seeking outright performance, the M5 should be your next tire.

RIDER NOTES:

“Great tire – not as sharp steering as I would have liked but not bad at all. It felt a little tall in the front. The rubber compound felt rigid and lacked that hint of road feel I like. A very good tire nonetheless. It steered predictably with loads of grip but because it didn’t have a ton of feel I worked into this tire slowly. And the more I leaned on them, the better they performed. Stability was excellent too, but they could be a tad bit more communicative.”
