While defending Grand National Champion Jared Mees is leading the title chase again this season, a specter hung over this feat. Despite having the most points, victory had eluded him. No more. Mees shot off the line like a rocket, came out of Turn 2 of the first lap with a lead, and never looked back on his way to a wire-to-wire victory in the Black Hills Half Mile in Rapid City.
“You know, I just really wanted to win one so bad,” said Mees. “I hated hearing ‘Hey, he hasn’t won his race yet’ and you know, how cool to do it here at the 75th Anniversary with Black Hills Harley-Davidson. This track was so awesome. Terry Rymer, for him to bring us back and to win this race, Harley-Davidson, Motor Company, it was just awesome. I know I needed to get a good start and run my own race and that’s exactly what I did.”
Mees was pumped on the podium as he thanked his long list of sponsors, giving Rekluse clutches a particularly big shout-out for helping him grab the holeshot.
“It feels so good to get that first win!”
The only rider able to keep Mees honest was Zanotti Racing/Harley-Davidson rider Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. He doggedly chased him all race long, closing the gap to a half-second on Laps 13 and 14. But every time Coolbeth, Jr. got close, Mees Spidey senses must have been tingling because he’d respond to open back up the gap. Coolbeth, Jr. would cross the line in second, 1.287-seconds behind the winner.
“I would catch Jared, and fall back, catch him and fall back. You know, we caught him there probably like six laps to go or whatever, and we were pretty close, close as we were the whole race, and the lapped rider kind of shafted us a little bit. It’s racing. He did what he had to do. He’s a great competitor and that’s why he’s got that No. 1 plate,” said Coolbeth, Jr.
Behind the two Factory Harley riders, the No. 14 USC/Hart Racing Kawasaki of Briar Bauman battled with Stevie Bonsey on the No. 80 Cliff Racing Harley-Davidson for the final spot on the podium. Bonsey started moving up from mid-pack on Lap 10 and the duo soon distanced themselves in the 3-4 position. Bauman rode a determined race and won the sprint to the finish line to earn the third spot on the podium. Bonsey’s fourth-place showing was his best results since winning in Daytona.
Crosley Radio Kawasaki rider Bryan Smith had his hands full dicing with the Briggs Auto Harley-Davidson of Sammy Halbert and Country Saloon/R&R Racing Harley of Robert Pearson for the 5-7 spots. For much of the race Pearson was in the chase position as all three packed up. On Lap 18, Smith ran up the inside of Halbert trying to take the fifth position, but Halbert powered out of Turn 2 with the lead. Slammin’ Sammy edged Smith at the line by 0.063 seconds, the Kawasaki rider finishing sixth. Pearson almost got caught by Wyatt Maguire but held on for seventh place. Maguire was the eighth-place finisher, with Henry Wiles and Doug Lawrence rounding out the Top 10.
It was a discouraging night for Harley Factory Rider Brad Baker who first had to fight his way into the Main from Semi 2, then broke his leg during the first lap of the GNC1 Main. Baker sat fourth in championship point standings coming into the race.

AMA Pro GNC2 Black Hills Half Mile Results 2015
Polesetter Davis Fisher was dominant on the Black Hills Half Mile Tuesday night. The 67M Parkinson Brothers Racing rider was the fastest qualifier, won his heat race, and carried that momentum into the GNC2 main event on his way to the victory, his second of the season.
“I kind of fell off at the beginning and was just trying to find the line I ran that I ran in the heat race. Thankfully I finally found it about halfway through. I can’t thank the Parkinson Brothers enough. It’s awesome to see everyone out here, big thanks to Terry Rymer for putting this race on,” said Fisher from the podium.
Once Fisher got out in front on Lap 9, he quickly found his groove and checked out, winning the race by 1.889 seconds.
While Fisher earned the win, it was14A Dalton Gauthier who grabbed the early lead on his Yamaha YZ450F. Despite leading for the first eight laps, Gauthier would fall back and finish the race in seventh place.
Early on, Fisher had his hands full with the No. 54A Bromley Brothers KTM of Dan Bromley. The two went back and forth, Fisher powering past on Lap 3 before running high, allowing Bromley to quickly return the favor. While Fisher gapped the field, Bromley soon had his hands full with the Fat Guys Racing Honda of Ryan Wells. The sprint to the finish line was won by Bromley, who edged out Wells by 0.078 seconds. With his second-place showing, Bromley also jumped up to second in the GNC2 point standings, 16 behind Fisher.
Kolby Carlile rumbled across the line just behind Wells to capture fourth place, 0.088 seconds behind. Brandon Wilhelm would hold off John Vanderlaan to grab the final spot in the GNC2 Black Hills Half Mile top five.
The AMA Pro Flat Track paddock heads to Peoria, Illinois, on August 16 for the only TT race of the season.
