As I rolled the Sprinter into the parking lot and scanned the trucks full of motocross bikes I quickly snatched up the invitation off the passenger seat, making sure I was at the correct address for the Troy Lee Designs adventure gear introduction and ride. The address was indeed correct and across the top of the Troy Lee Designs invitation in bold red letters were the words “Mammoth Adventure Ride.” It also said license plate required. I began to get a little restless thinking about the DR650SE (with a license plate) that was my steed for the next two days. During the five hour drive to Mammoth I was fearful the little 650 would be outgunned by actual adventure bikes, instead it looked like I had just pulled into the pro pits at Anaheim 1.

I’ve been on a lot of adventure rides, on real adventure bikes, often for many days at a time, so when I read an invite to go on an adventure ride showcasing new adventure riding gear, I pictured a BMW GS, a KTM 1190 or similar big motorcycles (with a license plate) capable of carving up a mountain road, navigating dirt roads and some two track as well. Seeing the non-street legal motocross bikes with open exhausts I knew I was in for some sort of adventure. I do have to give props to the two journalists who rode all the way from southern California on real adventure bikes to the Mammoth Adventure Ride.

After a delicious lunch, the Troy Lee Designs crew presented the new gear. The collection is the brainchild of Troy Lee, who wanted to develop a technical line of off-road riding apparel from adventure to dual-sport to enduro riding. The HYDRO waterproof collection of adventure gear is designed for serious miles and all weather conditions. The Troy Lee Designs Radius gear is a blend of off-road and light adventure, with an in-boot design pant. Seeing as how I brought a motorcycle that wasn’t meant for soaring over 100 foot jumps, I chose to spend a few days riding in the HYDRO pant and jacket.

I hate clichés but there really isn’t a better way to describe the first day of riding than to say it was like herding cats. Over 20 bikes (most lacking any legality to be on the streets) mixed with a metric ton of dust had riders sprawled all over the Mammoth area in a 30-mile radius. The large group eventually digressed into clusters of bikes darting across the landscape. It was all I could do to keep the DR650SE anywhere near the pace of the motocross and enduro bikes through single track and whooped out two-track. After a few hours of wiping dust from my goggle lenses I found the freeway and promptly hit the turn signal blinker and headed back to town, dust mustache and all. Daydreaming of wet dirt and single track at 60 mph on the freeway I was slapped into clarity by a Honda CRF450 as it roared by. License plate? We don’t need no stinking license plate!

When the sun broke the horizon on the second day I was finishing breakfast and had a little group of riders rallied (with street legal dirt bikes) to find some scenic roads and epic views. Just a few miles out of town we climbed a fun rocky road for many miles and eventually found ourselves at a cool lake. It was the definition of an adventure-style ride and totally erased the chaos of the first day.

How is the HYDRO gear? It is a solid first effort. With two full days wearing the jacket there are little things that need refinement like the collar rubbing against the neck and the main zipper is on the small side, requiring precision and effort to get it to zip up. The HYDRO pants are comfortable but after only a few days the lower area that rubs the frame and footpegs showed signs of wear and small nicks in the leather. The zippers are also too small on the lower sections over the boot. At the end of the second day I could only get it unzipped halfway, nearly requiring me to cut the pant to get it off the top half of my boot. As winter approaches hopefully California sees enough rain to test just how well the waterproofing of the HYDRO gear works. MotoUSA will be testing the HYDRO gear more as well as the new Radius gear.
