2017 Suzuki SV650 First Look

Who would have thought the Suzuki SV650 would attract such a legion of devoted fans when it debuted in 1999. Now almost 20 years later, the SV enjoys almost cult-like status. A favorite of club racers, the grunty V-Twin-powered SV650 has proven its worth on many a track, friendly enough for new riders to earn their stripes but aggressive enough to put a grin on the faces of experienced riders as well.

That being said, SV650 loyalists will be ecstatic to hear the 2017 Suzuki SV650 is said to be both lighter and more powerful. The 645cc 90-degree V-Twin has been totally revamped with 60 new parts. Suzuki used the Finite Element Method to design the new pistons to obtain maximum rigidity without adding excess weight. New resin-coated piston skirts aim to minimize friction. Each cylinder sees twin spark plugs for ignition, Suzuki’s Dual Throttle Valve fuel-injection system highlighted by 39mm throttle bodies and 10-hole fuel injectors. The new 2-into-1 exhaust system is said to be lighter and utilizes a catalyzer for reduced emissions. As a whole the new package is claimed to deliver more horsepower and more low- to midrange torque.

Introducing the 2017 Suzuki SV650.

The chassis of the 2017 Suzuki SV650 has been totally revamped as well with more than 70 new parts and components. The lightweight steel, trellis-style frame helped the 2017 SV650 shed 15 pounds from the prior SFV650. The fuel tank is 2.5-inches narrower than the 2015 SFV650 but still holds the same amount of gas, the slimmer design said to make it easier for riders get two feet planted squarely on the ground. Suspension is provided by a 41mm fork with 4.9 inches of travel teamed to link-type rear shock with seven-way preload adjustability. Braking duties are handled by 290mm dual floating front discs teamed to two-piston Tokiko calipers with a 240mm disc anchoring the rear. A new Nissin ABS system that is lighter and more compact than the prior unit is available on the 2017 SV650A.

The 2017 SV650 features Suzuki’s one-push easy-start system from the 2016 GSX-S1000. No fuss starts are facilitated by Suzuki’s patented Throttle-body Integrated Idle Speed Control (TI-ISC) that also regulates engine idle speed and helps keep emissions to a minimum. The TI-ISC also features a new low-rpm assist feature to help launch the bike off the line “that seamlessly adjusts engine speed during take-off and low-speed running to smooth the power delivery and to help eliminate the possibility of the rider stalling the motorcycle” according to Suzuki.

The latest SV650 is equipped with a multifunctional LCD display that includes a slew of information – gear position indicator, digital speedometer, tachometer, an odometer, trip meter, average/instantaneous fuel consumption, driving range, clock, water temperature gauge and fuel gauge. The display’s backlighting offers six different settings.

The 2017 Suzuki SV650 is slated to hit dealerships in late spring/early summer. MSRP has not yet been released.
