Zero Motorcycles’ Ryan Biffard Explains New Z-Force IPM Motor

Byron Wilson | December 9, 2015

Zero Motorcycles does this neat thing on Livestream where it broadcasts information about products, technology and the company to anyone interested in watching. One of the most recent presentations was made by Ryan Biffard, Director of Powertrain Engineering at Zero Motorcycles, in which he explains the latest motor developments which have yielded one of the company’s most efficient and powerful motors to-date. It’s the Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) motor design, which features a reduced number of components than the previous surface mount design and better thermal efficiency, allowing for higher continuous output and some impressive torque figures. Some models, like the new 2016 DSR Adventure bike announced at this year’s AIMExpo, boast more than 100 lb-ft of torque with the new motor. The IPM has a number of patent pending elements to its design and is an elegant piece when broken down to its various parts. Biffard is thorough in his presentation and later answers numerous questions regarding the new motor and its performance aspects during the second half of the video below. It’s a bit long, but if you have any interest in electric motorcycle technology, it’s well worth the watch.
