Victory pulls the cover off its latest entry in the V-Twin muscle bike segment with its 2017 Octane. With an MSRP of $10,499, the Octane is thousands less than similarly categorized cruisers from the Bar & Shield brand, as well as Japan and Italy.
The 2017 Victory Octane sources a production version of Victory’s prototype Project 156 mill. Engineered for competition, the engine powered Victory’s racebike during last year’s Race to the Clouds at Colorado’s Pikes Peak. Unfortunately, its race was ill-fated resulting in a DNF due to vapor lock (a condition when fuel evaporates from liquid to gas). However, engineers learned a lot from their mission up the mountain.
Powered by a water-cooled and dual-overhead cam 1179cc (72-cubic-inch) Twin, the fuel-injected engine features four-valve cylinder heads and a 60-degree cylinder angle, just like Indian’s Scout. Piston stroke measurement is also the same at 73.6mm, but bore increases 5mm. Compression was also boosted slightly.
Tire smoke and lots of it. That’s what Victory is after with its new Octane power cruiser.
The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with a cable-actuated clutch, and belt final drive. Victory claims the powertrain is good for over 8000 revs, 104 horsepower and 76 lb-ft of torque. This means it sprints across the quarter-mile in 12-seconds flat. Press materials also show it capable of wheelies and power drifts, presumably in first or second gear.
The chassis is comprised of cast-aluminum front and rear sections with a twin-tube steel pieces completing the frame. A progressive spring-rate fork and twin shocks soak up bumps and deliver 32-degrees of lean angle before the forward-mount footpegs kiss asphalt.
Braking is full-manual (no ABS offered) and hardware consists of 298mm cross-drilled discs at each end paired with twin-piston front, and single-piston rear calipers. The front anchor also benefits from a stainless-steel hydraulic line as opposed to a squishy-feeling rubber hose. On the scale, the Octane is said to weigh 528 pounds minus fuel, oil and coolant.
A Victory that wheelies? You betcha. The American bike brand ups the performance ante against its bar and shield foe.
Expected to arrive on U.S. dealer floors later this spring, the Octane wears a neo-classic silhouette with LED tail light and turn signals. A halogen-bulb headlight is encased inside a oval fairing and fly screen. A pair of swept needle gauges keep tabs on ground and engine speed.
