Thailand had some of the most colorful temples, or “wats” in the world, golden eye catchers in even the smallest of villages.

Many temples were open to the public, encouraging visitors to stop and look.

One of the more unique Buddhist temples was seen along the road in northern Thailand.

A typical parking lot at a shopping mall demonstrated how motorcycles, especially small displacement motorcycles, play a major role in the transportation system of Thailand.

Although expensive, varied large displacement motorcycles could be purchased in Thailand.

For the adventurer needing speed, some of the world’s fastest motorcycles were seen on the streets of Thailand, as well as screaming down countryside roads.

A Thai style “Indian” motorcycle was seen in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Honda has been the “king” of imports in Thailand since the 60’s; some of the models were still daily runners.

A Harley Davidson adventure tourer that was not a Harley-Davidson.

I had seen this Norton Commando adventure touring as far away as Cambodia, a unique adventurer tourer in SE Asia, here spotted in northern Thailand.

Kawasaki rentals were a common sight, favored by the adventurers who chose form over function.

If a BMW enthusiast wanted an adventurer tourer, it could be acquired in Thailand, although often costing nearly twice what it would in other parts of the world.

Harley-Davidson had a visible presence in Thailand, but like the BMW models, was pricy and limited in models available.

Author tested some of the jungle roads in Thailand on an imported BMW HP2, likely the most expensive off-road motorcycle many of the villagers he passed will ever see.

This Chinese adventure rider was spotted testing a prototype Chinese model motorcycle and accessories in northern Thailand, having ridden into Thailand from China through Laos, a major adventure. The aluminum panniers were called “TOURFELLA,” possibly available in the future outside China.

Motorcycle rental agencies were “adventure friendly,” often offering not only rental motorcycles but also free information and detailed knowledge of regional motorcycle adventure options.

Through some motorcycle rental agencies not only could the adventurer rent a motorcycle but they could also hire a local Thai/English speaking guide or sign-on for an organized tour.

If the adventurer opted for a sport touring motorcycle, many were available, but seldom came with more than the basic motorcycle. The wise sport-tourer adventurist brought their own riding gear and luggage.

More bikes "FORRENT".

A recent favorite for adventure touring in northern Thailand had been the Kawasaki KLX250, a 250 cc fuel injected model manufactured in Thailand.

Pictured here were two adventurists from Vietnam who traveled two-up for nearly two weeks on a rented Kawasaki KLX 250, more than enough machine to easily handle any and all roads or off-road trails they pursued.

This group of nearly 20 came to Thailand from Hong Kong seeking adventure, loyal to their Harley-Davidson models. They flew in, rented, and made a group adventure ride.

The “Freight Hawgs,” pilots from FedEx, rented a wide range of Harley-Davidsons from the rental agency, using a rented mini-van to follow and carry their luggage.

As the Freight Hawgs adventure started, following a well seasoned local guide, several indicated they would only have joined the adventure if on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, their defined choice of motorcycle for adventure touring.

A Thai roadside reminder to not drink and ride was seen here, not needing signs in English, or any other foreign language.
