Wheeler E-Z-Hook Streamliner Drivetrain Video
Monday, February 11, 2013
Sam Wheeler’s Race to 400 streamliner project continues, and Ignition3 chronicles the build with its latest video installment. Episode 4 focuses on the drivetrain, as Wheeler redesigns the E-Z-Hook streamliner to throttle past the standing 376 mph record and break the coveted 400 mph marker. The new drive system features a number of prominent component upgrades that have already been featured, including the new Hayabusa engine tuned by Vance & Hines and special transmission from Weismann, including a new belt drive to handle the stress. Episode 4 focuses on brakes and the new front end.
The braking system is provided by Sam’s “old high-school buddy” Roger Lamb, of Lamb Components. The E-Z-Hook will source a carbon/carbon brake system that is similar to those used in Pro Stock NHRA dragsters.
The Achilles' heel of previous world record runs has been the E-Z-hooks front end, with the tire unable to handle the extreme speeds. Wheeler shifted to a tireless aluminum wheel, that worked, but not very well. Stability issues from the suspension have required expert assistance in the form of Bruce Burness, who has helped dial in the front for 400 mph.
“He’s saved the project, really, to make this tireless front wheel work,” credits Wheeler in the video.
Burness brings more than 50 years of racing expertise, four- and two-wheeled, to the project. A former Ohlins engineer, where he developed his philosophy on tuning suspension, Burness perfectly sums up why he’s helping Wheeler chase a dream, and why many are rooting for him to break the record, saying:
“Sam wheeler is a hero for me. He’s been doing this since he was a teenager, and he has not flinched. This is his mission in life, is to set this record. He’s an incredible fabricator, unbelievable machinist… He’s just still dedicated to being the fastest guy on the planet on a motorcycle. I can really get behind that, and if there’s something I can offer up – I’m going to do it in a heartbeat.”
