Cookstown 100 Dokoupil Crash Photo

Friday, May 6, 2011
Native Irishman Ryan Farquhar may have taken top honors at the 2011 Cookstown 100 with his five race wins, but it was a spectacular crash photo of Michal Dokoupil that stole the front page. Photographer Derek Clegg snapped the carnage of Dokoupil crashing his Kawasaki in the first Superbike race. A journeyman racer on the Irish roads, having found success on the several road races in his native Czech Republic, Dokoupil reputedly suffered a broken ankle and vertebrae fractures in his dramatic Cookstown get-off. On his blog Clegg said of capturing the photo:

“I had found myself a high vantage point in a place of safety to enable me to capture this horrific image, which when witnessed through the viewfinder of a camera did not look good, but luckily Michal was attended to by Doctor John Hinds within seconds of the crash and then by the rest of the medics within two minutes where he received the best treatment possible.”

It’s a terrifying example of how things can go wrong in the Irish Road courses. Check out more of Clegg’s photography on his blog (derekclegg.net/blog) and on the virtual pages of Motorcycle-USA.com throughout the 2011 Irish road racing series. The next round on the Irish Road schedule is the Tandragee 100 on May 7.
