I own this bike. And 2 "equivalent" Japanese bikes. So, this comparison is "relative to" as opposed to "my opinion" (i.e. owning no other bikes at the same time).
1) Bikes from the "big 3" always need "component upgrading". The KTM does not.
2) The Japanese bikes are all difficult to work on (e.g. shock-spring adjustment a PITA). KTM a snap.
3) Testament: Last year I loaned this bike to a newbie, for use in the L.A.-to-Barstow-to-'Vegas HE MADE IT wow.
Downside? The seat sux, but so does every other bike seat. I put on a Renazco wow. Also... Fuel consumption 25mpg approx with 13T countershaft; 28mpg approx w/14T countershaft.
For single-track, leave on the stock 13T. Top speed will be 72mph+ (82mph+ w/14T).
Please, do not complain "2-strokes get lousy mpg". The KTM specific-output is *over 2hp/cu-in*. So you get super-power and super-light and super-reliability in exchange for 28mpg. I put on the KTM 6-gal tank (end of issue).
Torque? Wow. No need to "rev" to get power. 300cc is a big dirt-engine! No need for aftermarket "torque" pipe.
Ignore KTM rec for 60:1 oil. Use 40:1 top-quality synthetic.

great bike but beware, if you are up in tight woods, and it is over 70 degrees, you better have a fan installed. You can get one from the 4 strokes but you have to make a special fitting or buy the fan and a new right side radiator from a four stroke ktm.
other then this, well made, a lot of engineering into these bikes that will make you happy come mile 90 in an enduro.!
