2009 Ducati
1198 S
MSRP $21,795
Producing 170hp and with a dry weight of just 372.6lb, the new 1198 S now incorporates more World Superbike technology than ever before by taking the 1198 motor and adding top-of-the-range suspension, lightweight chassis components and a true racing-style traction control system designed for road use. The high performance, fully adjustable 43mm Öhlins forks, which sport low friction titanium nitride-treated fork sliders, respond effortlessly to every imperfection in the tarmac. Beyond their advanced engineering solutions, one of the most important characteristics of Öhlins forks is their ability to communicate the condition and quality of the tyre-to-road contact patch, a feature that puts every rider in superior control. The ‘S’ sets the standard for lightweight performance.

I was torn between the standard 1198 and paying more for the S, but when it came down to it, I wanted to be protected from my own mistakes either on the road or track and the 1198S has done that quite well.
The bike has never shocked me and even as extreme as I can ride it has always been very forgiving and predictable.
The transmission has loosened up a little and the radiator leaked after a hard day on Palomar Mt, Ca, but it was under warrante and was promptly fixed. I see the lights from the traction control light up from time to time, even at the mid level setting, so I know it's saving me from tire spin. The computer cuts in with very little interference noted. The stock tires were also awesome, but at around $500 per set and 2700 miles, I had to step down from the Pirellis. The sound and engine torque is awesome and I have to get up on the bike to keep the front end down when coming out of a corner, but again the bike is easily controlled with great feel.
