FZ6R
MSRP $7,390
A rider in the market for an entry level or commuter 600cc bike doesn’t have to compromise performance or style to get value. The Yamaha FZ6R is a great combination of performance, handling, and exciting sport bike style, but also with a low seat height that’s both adjustable to fit a wider variety of riders and also narrower where it counts to make it even easier to put both feet on the ground.

I bought the FZ6R to add to my riding stable - a FJR1300 supersport touring, and VTX1300 v-twin cruiser. It was a leftover 2009, and got it for a bargain $1500 off retail.

My needs were for a city bike that could scoot around town for errands and while sipping gas. Getting up to 51 MPG means I can ride all week on one fill up, yet get a range up to 225 miles when riding out in the country side. I think the styling looks like a “Baby FJR” because the farings and lines are similar. Being fuel efficient, It’s not a rocket like the FJR, but it is much lighter and sharp handling in urban traffic makes it a huge plus. It literally steers by itself because it‘s effortless. The wide pillon and grab bars are excellent for strapping a back pack, but even better for passenger comfort. Brakes are outstanding, excellent bite and control, a lot like the FJR - don’t miss the need for ABS on this bike. The instruments are very good with a tach, speedo that reads 10% too fast, 2 trip meters, odo, a fuel gauge that reads “E“ far too early, and very useful radiator temperature gauge. The fires up instantly and needs no warmup. The clutch has a long travel and the friction zone is short making shifting a bit snatchy. The factory saddle is too hard, so I added 1” of padding. The windscreen is far too small for my taste, resulting in wind blast over 55 MPH. The optional factory bubble screen does works pretty well and cost only $69, but you have to tuck down low. On a hot summer day, this motor puts out a lot of heat, and you can feel it on your right leg. It must be coming from the muffler located near the footpegs. Public reation: I get a lot of favorable comments wherever I ride.

By the way, to get an amazing jump in performance, I put Castrol Power RS Racing 4T - 10W40 full synthetic oil after the first 600 mile oil change. It now revs faster, smoother, and higher with the same throttle input. It’s great stuff . The best $38 I ever spent.
