The New York stop of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show rolled into Manhattan’s Jacob Javits convention center over the weekend. Tens of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts made it out to the expo to see all of the latest and greatest powersports equipment for 2012. Although the show has already made stops at other American cities, New York is one of the largest exhibitions attendance-wise so a few surprises were in store from manufacturers.

DUCATI DEALERSHIPS GET A NEW LOOK

Ducati has a history of establishing trends in motorcycle technology and fashion, and its latest venture focuses at the dealership experience. Beginning with its flagship Manhattan store, Ducati will be revamping showrooms worldwide to give buyers a more engaging shopping experience akin to what shoppers would expect at other up-scale mainstream brands.

“Our idea is to really create a nice, easy, comfortable environment for customers,” said Ducati North America’s General Manager, Dominique Cheraki. “With this new retail design we really want to communicate our core value. We are Italian. We are producing performance and high-technology motorcycles. We have some exclusivity that we really want the customer to understand.”

HONDA ADDS A NEW MID-LEVEL STREET BIKE

Compared to other manufacturers, Honda’s model lineup has been stagnant for quite some time. However, it’s looking to create new categories and attract new motorcyclists with its fresh NC700X. Carrying a price starting at $6999, this new machine has the ability to win over riders due to its combination of a reasonable price, ample performance, and ease-of-use. Another notable feature is the optional use of Big Red’s fabulous Dual-Clutch Transmission which allows clutch-less operation of the motorcycle - a boon for those who have always been put off from motorcycling by the need to work the clutch. For more information check out the 2012 Honda NC700X First Look.

VICTORY MOTORCYCLES LINE-UP EXPANDS

American motorcycle brand, Victory also introduced two new rides in New York as revealed in the 2013 Victory Judge First Look. Designed to complement its existing Hammer S muscle bike, the Judge is designed with a little more “sport” in mind without compromising that classic cruiser styling. Victory and the Ness family of bike builders have had a long history of collaboration. This time the youngest Ness, Zach put the pen to paper modifying the Judge into a Café racer-themed machine complete with upgraded engine and chassis that delivers additional ground clearance for cornering theatrics. The bike is still a work-in-progress so expect the final version to show up at Bike Week in Daytona Beach, Florida this spring.

EVOLVE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

One New England company that is building serious momentum is Evolve Electric Motorcycles. Evolve offers a line of all-electric powered scooters and motorcycles. Its entry-level scooter model, the Helium, is priced at $2900 and is capable of reaching speeds up to 40 mph and a range of up to 80 miles on a single four-hour charge. Those looking for more exclusivity and performance will be keen on the Xenon which looks like it came straight off the movie set of Tron. Carrying a price tag of $55,000 the motorcycle zips around the city at speeds up to 70 mph.
