just weren’t satisfied with the “People’s Choice” award their striking 2003 Suzuki Volusia earned at the Detroit Ultimate Builder Bike Show
, so they loaded up their bikes and trucked ‘em out to Washington, D.C. to give it another go. The company’s decision paid off big-time as BlackSmith Motoring Co. became the first two-class winner of the 2011-2012 Ultimate Builder series, claiming the $3000 grand prize in the FreeStyle class for the Volusia known as “El Patron” and pocketing another cool grand for its 1977 Honda GL1000 Gold Wing
, “El Vaquero.”
BlackSmith Motoring’s “El Patron,” a 2003 Suzuki
C50 Volusia, features both power and grace. On the power side, its stock 800cc V-Twin has a stroker kit, big bore pistons and custom cams which bump up displacement into the 845cc range. If that wasn’t enough, it also gets about a 40 hp shot of nitrous.
While it runs on a stock frame, the front end geometry has been pushed out a bit thanks to raking out the triple trees four degrees. The front hoop has been bumped up to 21 inches and wrapped in a clean Metzeler whitewall on a wheel with machined spokes that give the illusion of being twisted. While Progressive provided the springs for the front, the rear features remote-operated Air Ride performance suspension. Every good “cholo” bike needs hydraulics, right?
On the classy side, “El Patron” is the type of bike whose details are revealed only after staring at it for a good long time. Its construction has a jeweler-like attention to detail, which is no surprise considering Gio’s many talents include being a jeweler. BlackSmith’s patented Houdini Illusion bar set-up ultra-clean. Which is a good thing when you’re flying high Carlini Apes like “El Patron.” The custom cruiser is full of fine details, from acid-etched rose patterns on the bars, fork, and fender stays to the three ounces of gold leaf that decorates the bike. The custom pipes have the coolest trucker flaps around on its tips and a crocodile seat and pillion pad add to its high-end transformation.

Gold Wing into a classic cruiser, you would never think it once was a stock Gold Wing. The motorcycle was found collecting dust in a backyard before Gio brokered a deal for the bike and the rest is history. Once again, BlackSmith’s Retro Mod class winner combines a pumped up engine surrounded by a bike with ultra-classy lines.
The GL1000 engine has a big bore kit and is supercharged with NOS. You wouldn’t expect a bike that has an old Indian Motorcycle-style aesthetic, from its red paint job to valanced fenders and louvered headlight, to run nitrous, but that’s the beauty of BlackSmith’s blend of engineering. The flat pipes that skirt the bike’s right side add to its uniqueness. There’s plenty of beautiful engraving on this motorcycle thanks to Eazy Garcia, from its fork lowers to its pipes and nitrous bottle. Even the small bezels on the light and gauges have been hand engraved.
Garcia is best known for his work in the low rider industry, but demonstrates that his skills translate to motorcycles as well. “El Vaquero” has a faux gas tank which pops up to provide storage underneath while a pop-top gas tank is situated under the seat. Even the motorcycle’s key screams class as it has been inlaid with rubies. Major props to Gio and BlackSmith for injecting an old Gold Wing with new life.
Roy Chamberlain of C&C Cycles wore a big grin while posing with his oversized $2000 check as winner of the Hot Bike Modified Harley Class. “Black Shadow” is a 2002 Harley FLHTCUI with an 106 cubic-inch S&S mill whose heads have been ported and its cam, valves and throttle bodies have all been upgraded, too. Its backside has been beefed up with the addition of a 200mm rear tire which allowed C&C to add a stretched fender and stretched bags.
A combination of trick electronic gizmos also helped “Black Shadow” separate itself from the competition. Its front turn signals have been incorporated into the front fairing and sit underneath Lexan so they only become visible once they are actuated. The side mirrors have been substituted for a flat panel screen mated to an automotive-style rear camera with its lens fitted into the eye of a skull. Its license plate sits tucked away under the rear fender but swings out when the motorcycle is started. The end result is a smokin’ hot bagger that’ll run like the devil.
The final money winner from the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in D.C. is James Antonio who captured the top prize in the Performance Custom Class for a wicked 2003 Kawasaki ZX9R. “Reaper” features a rear section which has been stretched and modified with a 240 kit by Track Dynamics while its front section is off a Kawasaki ZX-12. According to Antonio, the motorcycle has a bunch of one-off pieces. The custom airbrushing was done in-house by Meticulous Concepts and is even on the inside in places where it’s not even seen. Every bolt on the bike has been 24 karat gold-plated. A skull-laden Grim Reaper paint job in blood red and black helped the sportbike earn its nefarious name.
Janette Coles won the adoration of the people in the nation’s capital for her Michael Jackson Tribute bike. Built by Eye Candy Designs out of California, the 2009 Suzuki GSX-R750 has plenty of custom bodywork, an extended single-sided swingarm and fat 240mm rear. Chromed out controls and covers shine bright against the custom blue paint as images of Jackson in various stages of his career form a fitting tribute to the “King of Pop.” Michael still has a lot of fans out there, evidenced by Coles earning D.C.’s “People’s Choice” award.
The Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show is going strong as it travels with the International Motorcycle Show to New York this weekend, usually is the biggest stop of the tour. Can’t wait to see what the custom bike scene in the “Big Apple” brings out.
