Slung low with a slender profile and timeless styling, Rick Bray's 'Pala Duro' won the coveted FreeStyle Class at the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show San Mateo 2012.
The Shovelhead powering Rick Brays 1981 Kustom Kustom was built by Kirk Taylor of Custom Design Studios.
The J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Shows rolled into California’s Bay Area for the third round of competition this past weekend as the series begins its West Coast swing. With $7000 in prize money being divvied out in five separate categories, the Ultimate Builder Show brought out some of NorCal’s most talented custom motorcycle builders as event organizers said “The entries in San Mateo were very much different than anything we had seen in Dallas or Atlanta.” Seeing how the show was happening in Arlen Ness’ neck of the woods, it was only appropriate to have someone from the Ness family of custom bike builders representing at the show, in this case grandson Zach who greeted fans and signed autographs. Zach is a third-generation builder whose eye for design has earned respect in its own right.

In the hotly contested San Mateo FreeStyle Class, Rick Bray claimed the $2500 top prize for his immaculate pinstriped Harley Shovelhead with a chromed Springer front end. Bruce Boldon’s Fat Boy beat out Paul Binford’s Road Glide to claim top honors in the Modified Harley class while Jim Guiffra and the AFT Customs girls captured first place in the Performance Custom class for their custom 2012 VT750BR Honda Street Tracker. Here’s a complete list of winners from the San Mateo Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show courtesy of our friends at BikerPros.

FreeStyle Class
Rick Bray brought his custom bike to the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in San Mateo, CA and rode away with the win. The bike is called ‘Pala Duro,’ which means Hard Shovel in Spanish which was only fitting considering the motorcycle runs a Harley-Davidson 80-inch Shovelhead. Slung low and slender, ‘Pala Duro’ has an award-winning stance. Rick is an off-road race car builder by trade and his fabrication work shines through on motorcycles, too. All of his brass components, from the gas cap to the fasteners, are from scrap metal that he turned on a lathe. The bike has a finned theme throughout, from the Kirk Taylor-built engine and rocker boxes to the frenched-in gas tank panels to the beehive oil tank. After the bike was built in raw metal, it was torn down and sent out for paint. Rick has worked with his painter, Kool Hand Luke, for so long that he just drops off his parts for paint and it comes back right every time. Rick bought the roller from his brother to start the build and the rest, as they say, is history.

diamond cut the heads. Wherever the bike isn’t chromed, it’s powder coated. The bike’s frame has been chromed and engraved, too, a process that extends to its diamond-cut Ridewright Wheels.. Spoked-down with wide beach bars and incredible engraving throughout, Boldon’s Fat Boy is indeed one ‘Wicked Beauty.’

Performance Custom Class
Jim Guiffra and the AFT Customs girls ruled the Performance Custom Class for their slick Honda street tracker called Halia. The Hondda VT750BR has hand-formed aluminum fenders and side covers to go along with a handmade steel tank. Touches like a hidden radiator and race suspension help set it apart from the competition. Halia is a testament to girl power as 60% of the bike was built by the AFT models. The bike has dual purposes, one for custom bike shows and the other for running on the Salt at Bonneville. The little V-Twin sports an AFT Power Package, including new pistons with ported and polished heads. A Barnett clutch, K & N filters, Leo Vince muffler and Dynatek coils fill out the list of power upgrades.
