As they say, if the weather is bad outside, then inside will be packed. That was certainly the case Saturday on a brisk 3-degree day in the Great White North that saw record attendance for the 2013 Minneapolis round of the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike. H. Gio Giovanni and BlackSmith Motoring made the trip over from Chicago and took wins in both the Modified Street and Modified Harley categories, establishing themselves as the leading money winners in the meantime. Local custom building legend Donnie Smith was also on hand with a special showcase featuring his work.

Freestyle
Deadline Customs was straight representing in the Twin Cities, capturing the top two spots in the Freestyle class with custom versions of Harley’s Road Glide. Dan Coates was all smiles after his “Gotta Love Orange” took home top honors and the $2500 first prize check that goes along with it. Coates’ 2011 Road Glide had to have its neck custom cut down to accommodate the huge 26-inch Rampage front wheel. The brightly colored bagger has plenty of custom bodywork, from the interior of the front fairing to the scooped-out tank to the extensions of the saddlebags. The engine rocks it with a TC103 equipped with free flowing exhaust and tuner. Big shout-out to DLC/Jeff Urman for the killer paint and skull graphics that really set the bike off.

intake and heads. A cholo fishtail exhaust system adds a bit of panache to the highly stylized bike. Acid-etched BlackSmith Houdini Illusion apehangers stand out above the BlackSmith Diamond 21-inch front hoop, the front end race-tuned while a BlackSmith Bandito Air Ride drops the rear to the ground. BlackSmith Lo Lo fenders drape the whitewalls front and back. An alligator seat Gio tooled in-house and 8-stage candy paint with ghost graphics are classy details which helped set “El Puro Vato” apart from the competition.

Performance Custom
Nitro 6 lives up to its name as the nitrous-fed 2004 R6 from Josh Headlee sped away from the competition to take top honors in Minneapolis Performance Custom class. Headlee’s R6 is boosted by a Zex Nitrous Oxide kit, velocity stacks and titanium headers, all dialed in courtesy of Dynojet’s Power Commander. A custom extended swingarm stretches the bike’s backside while a custom race tail keeps the bike’s aesthetics balanced. Headlee’s Yamaha has a chrome frame and Arnott Air Suspension. Custom controls and Galfer Chrome Wave Rotors add flash to its dash while wicked paint has been applied by Auto Remodel Specialties.

Retro MOD
Hot Bobby Henry worked out of his garage to build his 1958 HD FLH 74” chopper, winner of Minneapolis’ Retro Mod class. Henry’s “HotPan” has a frame built by his friend Gator in St. Paul based off a Single Loop Motorshop Frame. The modified V-Twin features polished cases, Jim’s Lifters, Andrews Cams, Wiseco Pistons, and HD Heads. S&S is responsible for the oil pump and carb. The ’58 FLH runs a Joe Hunt Magneto and Headlee wired it with a 12V generator and an Electric Frank’s regulator. Sprung in the front and rigid in the back, Headlee has constructed one lean, clean ride.

Modified Street
Gio and BlackSmith Motoring are making a habit of ruling the Modified Street class with its turbo charged bagger called “El Vendetta.” The 2008 Yamaha Retroliner features a BlackSmith 120ci stroker with forged pistons, a lightened crank, and HIPO heads and intake which boost power output to 255 hp. The Retroliner/Roadliner is a showcase for BlackSmith’s creativity as the company outfitted it with its Retroliner conversion kit, three-piece steel fenders front and rear, floorboards, grips, air ride suspension, chome engine covers and more tidbits all built in-house by BlackSmith. Engraving on the wheels and good ol’ gator leather for the seat and pillion pad helped “El Vendetta” put distance between it and the competition.
