2013 Red Bull A Day in the Dirt 16 Preview

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

It’s T-minus 17 days to not only one of our favorite holiday weekends, but dirt bike races, too. What started 16 years ago as a group of Hollywood stuntman looking to get together Thanksgiving weekend to camp and race their dirt bikes has become a full-fledged Southern California party. Once again, it all goes down at Glen Helen Raceway at the Red Bull A Day in the Dirt Motocross Grand Prix.

The fun begins Friday with Troy Lee Happy Hour Practice from 9 am until noon. During the three-hour long practice you’ll get a taste of the unique grand prix-style course that’s comprised of Glen Helen’s AMA national caliber main track, smaller REM motocross racing circuit, and adjacent off-road trails. For sure the lap will be long, the terrain rough, but since competitors of all ages and skills are racing the layout won’t be too jumpy or technical in an effort to keep everyone safe.

The big news this year is the addition of Saturday’s Bossa Nova Grand Prix. The contest challenges teams of threes, all-competing on the track at the same time. Although it sounds complicated it really isn’t with the best aggregate finishing order between the three riders used to compile the score.

“We are trying to change it up a little bit and add a little more camaraderie,” says stuntman, racer, and A Day in the Dirt organizer, Kenny Alexander. “I always like to race with my buddy’s so why not get scored together and try and get a victory.”

You never know who you will line up next on starting line at A Day in the Dirt… however this year, you might make a cameo in the upcoming sequel to an motorcycling cult classic, On Any Sunday film: The Next Chapter. Bruce Brown’s son, Dana, who also helped create the surfing documentary, Step Into Liquid and Baja 1000 racing flick, From Dust to Glory, directs the follow-up.

“We are going to be the closing of the movie,” Alexander explains. “Their new cast is coming out and will be mixed in with the old cast from back in the day. It’s going to be a good time.”

"The original On Any Sunday film was what started my love for motorcycle racing and it still has a strong influence on my life to this day,” adds Troy Lee, founder of Troy Lee Designs and long-time supporter of the Red Bull Day in the Dirt event. “To have Freeride Entertainment, and Red Bull Media House coming out to shoot this event for the closing segment is a testament of what it has come to represent to the community.”

Check out the race schedule here at the Red Bull A Day in the Dirt website. As you can see there is an appropriate racing class for anyone in the family, regardless of their bike color or motor size. And if you’re into two-strokes and vintage bikes this is absolutely the place to burn some pre-mix at. Interested in being a vendor? Pickup up the phone and dial 661-263-8722. See you at the races!
