Motorcycles and Music – they have similar effects on the human condition. They excite, they relax, they illicit long and meaningful (and not-so-meaningful) discussions, but most important of all they bring people together. Recently Ducati brought the motorcycle press together for the DVD release of the “Marley Africa Road Trip” series, in which Ziggy,

Rohan and Robbie Marley travel through Africa on Multistradas. In turn, bringing local musicians together to perform their father’s music at a special concert at the end of the series.

Directed by David Alexanian, whose credits include moto-centric travel films such as “Long Way Round” and “Long Way Down“ starring Ewan McGregor, “Marley Africa Road Trip” is a six-part docu-series following the Marley brothers as they return to the land their father loved so much. Their adventures aboard the Ducati Multistrada 1200s are captured on rides from Johannesburg and as they prepare for a free concert in Soweto during the 2010 World Cup.

“Ziggy had seen the ’Long Way Down‘ and he was like, ‘Listen, it’s the first World Cup in Africa. My father was a soccer fanatic. We got to figure something out to do; do you want to do something?’ and we just started hanging out together,” explains Alexanian. “It’s so much about music and motorcycles. We did this stuff independently and I’m pleased we were able to cut it into a series. It’s an inspirational story and the motorcycles were a fun way of doing it.”

It turns out all three of the brothers are avid motorcycle riders and have been riding for quite some time, but Ziggy is more of an off-road rider.

“I like adventure,” said Ziggy. “My two brothers – they’re into street bikes. I like off-road stuff. When the idea came up to do this, I know they were bikers so I called them up and said, ‘I have this idea, wanna do it?’ Everybody jumped on it, and I said, ‘Let’s do it!’”

The five-time Grammy winner led our media contingent along with fans on a ride up Angeles Crest Highway on the same Multistrada he rode in Africa. At the end of the ride was a short acoustic show by Ziggy and small band to benefit Life Rolls On and the Chestowe Basic School in the Jamaican parish of Port Antonio.

Ziggy’s younger brother Robbie joined in the ride as well, piloting a 2013 Panigale R that he had been eying all afternoon during the press interviews. The ride up to Newcomb’s was sedate to say the least, and he never really got to feel how the bike handled. So I invited him to our 2013 Supersport Shootout that took place a few days later to really get

to turn the screws on a Duc, and low and behold he held off heading home to Miami to turn some laps with us at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. Like I said earlier: motorcycling and music brings people together and makes friends from strangers.

As he kicked of the music Ziggy commented to the crowd about leading the ride up to Newcomb’s Ranch Roadhouse for the show, “Today s a very special day for me; I feel like I have a new family. I’ve rode bikes before, but I’ve never been with such a group of people before. So I feel like I have a new family, and I’m happy to be part of the family now.”

“Marley Africa Road Trip” is available now on iTunes, Netflix or Amazon.com.
