Friday, December 31, 2010
With the New Year almost here I began reflecting upon some of the cool bikes I tested and adventures I got to undertake in ‘10. This sounds almost ridiculous, but I go on so many trips that it actually becomes hard to remember all of them so I thought I would list some of my favorite, most epic adventures and bike tests from 2010 for ya’ll to read. Happy holidays and e-cheers to doing it all over again in '11!

2009 Kawasaki ZX-6R Project Bike Part 5
Waheed battles with the 741 machine of Sander Donkers in Formula 2.
For the final phase of our 2009 Kawasaki ZX-6R Project Bike we returned to the the racetrack, this time at The Fastest Road in the West aka the 2.5-mile Big Track at Willow Springs International Raceway. The occasion was the third round of the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club (WSMC) road racing series. After all, what better way to evaluate the track worthiness of our project bike than to race it?

2010 Honda CRF450R MB1 Project Bike
MB1s mods significantly improved chassis balance which allows you to ride easier with more confidence.
After spending considerable time at the controls of Honda’s CRF450R during our 2010 Honda CRF450R First Ride and 2010 450 Motocross Shootout we wished to address some of the troubles we encountered with Big Red’s premier motocrosser. One of the few problems was the unbalanced feel of its chassis. Specifically, the front suspension felt overly soft and the back too stiff. This made it difficult to control on bumpy, high-speed tracks. To solve the problem we enlisted the help of MB1 Suspension...

2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200 First Ride
Make no mistake about it 2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200 is capable of being 100 sport.
For 2010, Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati has released the successor to its tried-and-true motorcycling Swiss Army knife: The 2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200. Despite using the same name as before, the new generation machine expands upon its original concept by utilizing a multitude of imaginative technologies that we’ve never seen on a Ducati, or any other production street bike. This allows it to achieve higher levels of performance, comfort and, above all, practicality. To discover some of its potential, Ducati invited MotoUSA to ride the new machine in one of Mother Nature’s most rugged, diverse, and ultimately magnificent proving grounds: The Canary Island’s Lanzarote, located west of the Moroccan coast...

Canary Islands Ducati Multistrada Trip
Youd be hard pressed to find a better universal two-wheeled companion than Ducatis Multistrada 1200.
It’s hard to imagine what the surface of our planet looked like so many millions of years ago. But a visit to the tiny island of Lanzarote reveals what it may have been. Situated off the coast of southern Morocco, Lanzarote is the easternmost landmass in the Canary archipelago. It’s a place of grand ecological contrast where seemingly lifeless layers of jagged rock, uprooted as molten lava from deep inside the earth’s core, meets vibrant, volcanically active hills. It’s a palette of white, tan, and black sand beaches against the crystal blue water of the Atlantic Ocean which creates a divine landscape...

Mat Mladin Suzuki GSX-R1000 Test
It was surprising how much effort was required to get Mats GSX-R1000 to turn. Although the DMG folks took the Super out of Superbike these bikes still arent easy to ride.
Sixty-two pole positions, 82 race wins, and seven AMA Superbike championships. This is the legacy of the most dominant motorcycle road racer America has ever known – Mat Mladin. Records like this don’t materialize without absolute harmony between man, machine and team. And it’s this alliance that allowed Mladin and his Yoshimura team to claim all but four of the his aforementioned race victories aboard Suzuki GSX-R Superbikes...

2010 Superbike Smackdown VII Street
Eight Superbikes with a collective HP total of over 1300 take on Thunderhill in our Smackdown VII.
Envision accelerating from a standstill to 60 mph in under three seconds, slicing through traffic like you’re behind the stick of an F-16, and achieving a top speed so high that we couldn’t find a road long enough to uncover just how fast these machines are. This is the essence of Superbikes—the fastest, most agile production motorcycles known to man. Sportbikes engineered by the stopwatch but sold for duty on the open road. And this year Motorcycle USA has eight of them for its 2010 Superbike Smackdown VII Street Shootout...

Kawasaki KX450F Mammoth MX Project
Frankie failed to make the 450 Junior main on Sunday after crashing in his heat race then tweaking his back in the LCQ.

But for 10 days each summer, this relaxed mountain resort is overrun by two-wheeled racing enthusiasts for the annual Mammoth Motocross event. Mammoth Dual-Sport and Motocross Trip
Heed tries to catch us some dinner in Mammoth Lakes.
There are places on our planet so stunning it can be difficult to discern whether what you’re seeing is real or imaginary. Landscapes so grand you can’t help but feel beset by Mother Nature’s magnificence. It’s here where colossal formations of stone, over time too great for any of us to truly comprehend, have been whittled into jagged peaks blanketed with mounds of white powder extending into the sky. Below, the freshly melted snow trickles down the mountainside and into the forested valleys where crystal clear lakes and thick pine trees drink it in creating this divine backdrop known as Mammoth Lakes...

These high-end, American-made street bikes blend boutique hardware, sophisticated electronics, and paint with an elevated degree of fit and finish. This gives the rider the best of both worlds: the exclusiveness of a one-off custom with the everyday reliability of a production motorcycle from a prestigious American factory...

In excess of 60 000 people showed up to Misano for the 10 edition of World Ducati Week.
Imagine being invited to one of the world’s wildest parties. Four days and nights of non-stop action with an endless supply of ice cold beer, beats thumping through speakers with such intensity that your body gyrates out of sheer instinct, scantily clad babes are everywhere. Yoshimura Yamaha YZ450F Project Bike
Our Yoshimura-prepped Yamaha YZ450F is one of easiest and fastest motocross bikes weve ever ridden.
In the realm of sportbikes and motorcycle road racing, Yoshimura Research and Development is a proven leader. Over the years it has annihilated the competition, having won more U.S. Superbike Championships than any other race team in the history of the series. But as we recently discovered, its tuning wizardry extends beyond the realm of asphalt and onto the dirt. To prove this it teamed up with Noleen J6 Suspension Technologies. The Ninja ZX-10R employs wheelie control that lets you to keep the throttle pinned to the stop when power wheelie out of a corner.

That motorcycle helped usher in the generation of sportbikes we enjoy today. 2010 Honda VFR1200F Comparison
The Hayabusa and VFR1200F both carve up ribbons of asphalt with the Hondas narrow profile and communicative chassis making turn-in and transitions effortless.
Is it a sportbike, or a touring bike?

The 2010 Honda VFR1200F refuses to politely slot into those rigid class structures we enjoy so much. In fact, Honda’s latest VFR baffled the press right from its inception, crashing onto the scene as a concept model at the 2008 Intermot Show. The word concept is a stretch, it was more like a concept of a concept – an interpretive sculpture of a VFR Honda would like to build…one day. We remember. We were there, with all the other journalists, when the curtain raised to reveal red bodywork with an odd, ominous X-shaped headlamp. All looked at one another with furrowed brows wondering, what is this?

Kawasaki Jet Ski MX Training Crossover
Longtime Kawasaki Jet Ski racer Victor Sheldon uses his left leg as a counterweight during aggressive turning maneuvers-just like the majority of MotoGP racers.
Imagine flying through the air at speeds in excess of 60 mph within inches of the guy next to you; blasting through a series of whoops so deep that most folks would have a hard time simply walking through them; leaning the bike over so far in a turn that the only thing from keeping you from falling over is the momentum generated by a generous twist of your right wrist. These are just some of the scenarios that occur during the course of a motocross race—a sport where balance, muscle coordination and the ability to think and act quickly are paramount. However, training for this demanding sport is neither easy nor safe, as the consequences for even a tiny mistake can have disastrous after-effects...

I hate watching you tear up the road.
I hate hearing about your thoughts on every bike.
I especially hate the fact that I am so damn jealous of your job.

Happy New Year Adam and the rest of the awesome MotoUSA team!
