Kawasaki unveils two all-new additions to its dirtbike lineup in the form of the KLX140 (above) and KLX140L.
Kawasaki adds two new KLXs to its dirtbike arsenal in the form of the all-new KLX140 and KLX140L. Powered by an air-cooled 144cc four-stroke Single, the two models were developed by the same Kawasaki motocross engineers that have made the vaunted KX models the kings of the AMA (that is with a little help from some guys named Ryan Villopoto and James Stewart.) The difference between the two models being the L's beefed up rear shock and larger wheels.
The Japanese firm has also made modifications to its KLX250S. Changes include improved engine mods to reduce vibes, improve fueling and increase fuel efficiency. The KLX250S, which is slated as a 2009 model, also meets California's evaporative emissions standards, making it 50-state legal. Other modifications include changes to steering geometry for improved handling and stability.
The following press releases from Kawasaki fill in the details.

2008 Kawasaki KLX140 and KLX140L
New riders, parents and pit racing zealots come in many size and experience levels, so why relegate them to simple one-sized machines? That's exactly the question Kawasaki's engineers pondered before creating the new KLX140 and 140L dirtbikes. To help satisfy a wide variety of riders in the small displacement off-road arena, this new model is offered in two wheel sizes, the more elementary 17" front / 14" rear wheeled KLX140 and the larger 19" front / 16" rear wheeled KLX140L. Both are designed to be friendly for beginners and novices, while also offering a roomy layout and enough performance to suit more-advanced riders.
An orange LED inside the on/off switch illuminates to indicate when electrical power is "ON" and the fun begins as soon as the rider's thumb meets the KLX140's electric start button. The high-revving, yet quiet, engine is wrapped in a high-tensile steel perimeter frame that uses the same upper tubes as the KLX250S and is covered by KX-like shrouds, while a two-tone seat cover and sharp, aggressive body work complete the modern KX-inspired design theme. The 140's controls also share KX genes, from the same grips as the top-level MX racers to the narrow footpeg/frame relationship combined with large footpegs that make it easier for the rider to move around with a minimum of effort.
This model's KX influence is more than skin deep; its development team not only included young test riders, but also pro SX/MX racers and Kawasaki's motocross engineers to give the KLX140 the same pedigree as the World Champion KX models. The effects of this talented group are evident in the KLX 140's ergonomically friendly layout, responsive engine power, five-speed transmission and dirt-worthy suspension.
Both variants have a 33mm fork with spring rate and damping settings specific to each version. The KLX140 rear shock features 5-way preload adjustability, while the larger KLX140L's aluminum shock includes a piggyback reservoir, fully adjustable preload, 4-way compression and 22-way rebound damping to suit high speed operation by heavier riders. To provide more options for growing riders; the standard KLX140 is also capable of accommodating the more-advanced shock from the KLX140L.

From the outside there is little to distinguish the KLX140L from his non-"L" sibling, with larger tires and a beefed up rear shock the main differences.
Abundant power from the air-cooled SOHC 144cc engine flows through a five-speed, close-ratio transmission that contributes to the KLX's accelerative performance. Its manual clutch offers young riders the chance to master full control over shifting. To promote an easy learning curve, the clutch features a spring damper that provides a progressive, two-stage engagement and facilitates half-clutch use while riding at extremely slow or idling speeds. Additional benefits of this system are a more direct clutch feel and increased durability.
RK EXCEL aluminum rims and high-grade die-cast hubs are another sign this isn't your little sister's play bike. A large 220mm front disc and 27mm twin-piston caliper at the front and a 186mm rear rotor grace the KLX140L with serious stopping power. Both use petal shaped discs, which help clean the brakes and reduce unsprung weight for better performance.
An ideal blend of small stature and big potential that simply equals fun for most rider sizes from kid to adult, the new KLX140 and KLX140L promise to rewrite the dirtbike rule book.
2009 Kawasaki KLX250S
A leaner, meaner and greener lightweight dual-sport machine The fun doesn't have to stop at pavement boundaries when riding Kawasaki's street legal KLX250S. This lightweight dual-purpose motorcycle is equally at home on the pavement or off-road and always ready for your next adventure. Now, thanks to significant updates that saw refinements made everywhere from its improved braking prowess to its aggressively styled bodywork, the KLX250S is more fun than ever.
A compact, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine displacing 249cc, the KLX250S features convenient electric-starting. The engine is mounted beneath a lightweight, high-tensile steel perimeter frame to deliver a low center of gravity and enhanced maneuvering on tight trails.
A gear-driven engine balancer means reduced engine vibration for greater comfort and less fatigue on longer rides. The 34mm semi-flat slide Keihin CVK carburetor boosts throttle response and contributes to improved power. It also helps to provide increased fuel economy. The addition of a new evaporative emissions system allows it to meet strict CARB regulations, making the KLX250S eligible for sale in all 50 states.
Further refinements appear in the transmission. Closer ratios between 5th and 6th gear enhance the KLX250S' high-speed off-road capabilities, while a reshaped shift cam offers a more positive shift feel and promotes firmer gear engagement.
The rigors of off-road motorcycling dictate additional protection for the exposed underside of most machines. The KLX250S comes standard with aluminum engine guards to protect its crankcase during off road adventures. Negotiating tight terrain also highlights another off-road reality - heat. The incorporation of dual lightweight, high-capacity Denso radiators and a shallow-footprint cooling fan is an ample solution to potential heat issues.

The 2009 KLX250S will be legal in all 50 States, with the Kwakker passing California's requirement for evaporative emissions controls.
The rake was increased a degree to 27.5 to boost straight-line stability, which is further enhanced by the rigid square-section frame. Thanks to its short wheelbase, the stability improvements didn't sacrifice any of the 250S' outstanding nimbleness or turning aptitude. At the other end of the chassis, a new lightweight aluminum swingarm employs a highly-rigid D-shaped cross section and features new KX racing-type chain adjusters for precise chain adjustment.
For 2009, the KLX250S received revised damping settings and reduced wheel travel at both ends, plus an all-new rear suspension linkage. These modifications help to increase straight-line stability, give a more planted feel in corners and make it easier for riders to reach the ground. The 43mm inverted cartridge-style front fork and Uni-Trak rear suspension both come with 16-way adjustable compression damping and offer 10.2-inches and 9.1-inches of travel, respectively.
New wheels feature 0.5mm thicker spokes for increased wheel rigidity and enhanced off-road durability. The KLX250S also offers upgraded stopping power from a twin-piston caliper and a 250mm semi-floating petal disc up front and a larger 240mm petal disc at the rear.
Finishing off this reworked package is a completely new set of aggressively styled bodywork, a re-shaped seat with firmer urethane, and a handlebar with a straighter profile.
The KLX250S offers serious capabilities in a fun, easy-to-ride package, regardless of where the adventure takes it. Riders seeking enduro handling and modern engine performance in a dual-purpose motorcycle designed for effortless street riding will find it at their local Kawasaki dealership.
