2009 KTM 1198 RC8R
An extra 47cc of displacement gives KTM's RC8R a 10 horsepower increase over its regular spec sibling.
The superbike world keeps getting bigger, as European marques move in on the Japanese market. KTM, Europe’s second-largest manufacturer, has literally made its superbike bigger with the release of a higher-spec version of the RC8 at the EICMA 2008 Milan Bike Show.

The new RC8R, the second version of KTM’s inaugural superbike, ramps up the performance factor with a larger engine. Increasing the bore from 103 to 105mm (same 69mm stroke) bumped up displacement for the 75-degree V-Twin from 1148 to 1195cc. The compression ratio also spiked, jumping from 12.5:1 to 13.5:1.

The liquid-cooled Twin uses the extra room to produce a claimed 165 horsepower in stock trim. Torque production is 90.7 lb-ft. (The regular RC8 only powers up to 155 hp and 88 lb-ft, according to KTM PR claims.) For the real power junkies, and racers, a sport kit brings the RC8R peak ponies up to 180 – a claim which evens up the new R with its Italian rival, the Ducati 1098R.

2009 KTM 1198 RC8R
A sport kit pumps the RC8R up to 180 horsepower, making it comparable to Ducati's R-model Superbike.
WP suspension components, a 43mm fork and monoshock, headline a near identical chassis spec sheet to its non-R sibling. Changes include a 5mm increase in trail (97mm – 3.82 in) and 5mm decrease in wheelbase (1425mm – 56.1 in). Another difference is the claimed weight (without fuel), with the R crossing the scales at a claimed 401.2 lbs (182 kg), 4.4 lbs lighter. In sport kit trim, the R would almost match the 1 to 1 metric power-to-weight ratio of the 1198cc Ducati Twin superbike.

No official word yet on when or if the new RC8R will turn competitive laps in the World Superbike championship. But with BMW and Aprilia all tossing their hats in the SBK ring, alongside with the dominance of Ducati, it’s not too big a stretch to imagine a European quartet vying against the Big Four from Japan. Stay tuned.

Emouse -Buel duel?  September 20, 2009 02:11 PM
A Buel compared to an RC8? That just has to be the most anal article of journalistic claptrap read in a long time. Sheer nonsense!

The RC8 is in a totally different league.
Slava -buell  April 11, 2009 09:38 AM
the buell maybe a match for the new 09 zx6, but not the rc8. KTM take it WSBK

Nick. I'd like to know what magazine you're talking about ? Who in their right mind would claim that Buel beats the RC8 ? And a story that you wrote yourself for the school magazine doesn't count. =) Seriously - name a magazine with that article. I'd like to see it. I own a Rc8 Riden it on roads, track and in the Cannonballbikerun 2008 Morocco and love it. Awsome bike. Had a 2005 Kawa Ninja before that.

Oke It. is good performan motorcycle.
Nick -Forgot about one other twin  November 24, 2008 03:40 PM
The euro mags have already been putting the updated 09 Buell 1125r against the RC8 and and they are all saying the Buell blows it out of the water, and even more so when you factor in the $8k price gap. I think the KTM is a great looking bike but they are getting a little ahead of themselves if they are going after Ducati with out even being abile to out run a Buell. After all most of us spend more time riding our bikes, not looking at them in the garage.

roadracerx -RC8R vs 1198  November 14, 2008 10:02 AM
I currently have a 1098 and for the most part it is a fantastic bike; after reading the review of the RC8 in Road Racing World and reading what was said about the RC8 I was a little disappointed because I wanted the RC8 to 'measure up' to the 1098. Now that Ducati has bumped up the displacement and added traction control the test is that much harder. That being said I think the RC8 is a great-looking bike, allbeit different, and good for them for bringing to market a machine that is different. If KTM can sort out the commonly known gearbox issues, fix the twitchy throttle and add a slipper clutch to this new RC8 AND keep the price somwhere around 25K, I'll buy one for sure.

The styling is very different, I'd almost buy it for that reason alone. All the modern litrebikes(and 1200s) have incredible performance anyway...
rlsedition -KTM RC8R  November 13, 2008 05:51 PM
Wow! I have yet to see an RC8 on the street and they bring out the niche model! Good luck competing head-to-head with Ducati, especially with that, ahem, unique bodywork design.
James -KTM WSBK  November 13, 2008 04:38 PM
So KTM is getting out of 250GP racing but they aren't going to jump into World Superbike with the RC8? What's up with that?
Doc. Brown -KTM 1198  November 13, 2008 12:51 PM
DUCATI, APRILIA watch out there is a new kid on the block, and he want's to play!
Doc.Brown -KTM 1198  November 13, 2008 12:42 PM
It's good to see a new breed of SBK inter the ring of who's the baddest bike on block! I hope it wont let me down.
teuton -ktm  November 13, 2008 09:57 AM
x2468 did you really call "Ducati Red" obnoxious??
x2468 -no subject  November 12, 2008 11:31 PM
54strat, you're too funny. bottle opener. i can't decide why, but for some reason i agree with that. but i do like how it looks. it's different from everything else, that's for sure. it reminds me of the F-117 stealth hawk. but really are KTM orange and Kawi green anymore obnoxious than Honda red, or Ducati's blood red?
54strat -Anybody notice this thing looks like a hyper-performance bottle opener?  November 12, 2008 02:05 PM
At least the bike in the article is black - KTM Orange is actually more obnoxious than Kawasaki Green (I vote for invisible). While the performance numbers that I've seen are on par with the Ducati superbike, and that whole valve-adjustment thing doesn't apply with the KTM, I can't wrap my mind around a bike that looks like Loony Tune dream sequence. Who am I kidding, I can't afford either bike. I would, however, like to get my hands of a wrecked RC, contact Airtech plastics, and put together a way cool cafe racer.
