The BMW F800R is an all-new model to join the Bavarian marque's growing roster of two-wheeled option.
The big BMW news at the recent 2008 EICMA Milan show was its Concept Lo Rider. But the Bavarian marque also pulled the cover off an all-new motorcycle that is more than just a concept – the 2009 F800R.

A naked roadster joining BMW’s 800 lineup, the twin-powered F800R has been long rumored. In fact, European stunt rider Chris Pfeiffer has competed aboard a similar-looking, specially-prepped F800S for the past few years. The new R sources the same liquid-cooled Parallel Twin powering its F800S sibling. Displacing 798cc, the 4-valve, DOHC design is claimed by BMW to produce 87 horsepower at 8000rpm and 63 lb-ft torque at 6000rpm. Changes fom the S model include a different exhaust and modified gearing, with gears 4-6 using a shorter ratio. Unlike its belt-driven S and ST siblings, the new F800R utilizes a chain drive.

Borrowing the S model’s aluminum frame, the R motor is a load-bearing element of the chassis. A slimmer cast aluminum double sided swingarm is original for the R (the S sports a single-sided unit) and is suspended by a central spring shock – adjustable for pre-load and rebound damping. A conventional 43mm fork takes care of suspension duties up front with 4.9 inches of travel (same as the rear shock). A steering damper comes standard on the F800R.

Similar to the G650 series, the F800R stores it fuel (4.2 gallon with 1 gallon reserve) under the seat for better weight distribution. BMW claims a fully-fueled weight of 449.7 lbs (204 kg) and dry weight of 401 lbs (182 kg).

Sporting a 2-inch longer wheelbase (59.84 in – 1520mm) than the S model, the seat height is almost an inch shorter at 31.5 inches. Two other seat options are available, with a lower 30.5 inch and higher 32.5 inch.

The BMW F800R will be gracing European shores in Spring of 2009. No official word yet on its US debut.
Owing to the minimalist front end, the all-new R model uses of a different display than the S. And, like the redesigned K1300 lineup, the F800R makes do without the quircky Beemer left/right/cancel turnsignals paddles, opting instead for conventional switchgear.

The new Beemer features top-line braking components with Brembo 4-piston calipers up front pinching a pair of 320mm steel discs. A single-piston/265mm disc is responsible for rear braking, and, as expected from a BMW, ABS is available as an option.

Speaking of which, riders can customize their ‘R’ with plenty of extra goodies from the BMW accessory bin. Heated grips, on-board computer, anti-theft system and luggage are standard fare upgrades for Beemers, but 800 owners can also select from two other seats heights and a sport windshield. The F800R comes in three paint options – Alpine White with black, Fire Orange and White Aluminum.

Just for the record for those of you wondering about comfort....... I did nearly 1600 kms (1000 miles) on her this past weekend and although the last 200 kms dragged a bit I was fresh enough to shower and go out to dinner when I got home. I'm 180cms and have the standard seat. I would possibly go the higher option if I chose again for a little more leg room but it's not bad as it is. I can try an "Air Hawke" to give the extra height next trip and then compare.

mid 50s and I just traded my R1200ST on the F800R. I can say the new bike handles wonderfully, non adjustable front notwithstanding, and has the best fuel economy of any bike I've ever had. Power is quite adequate with a solid flat torque curve that makes it easy to ride. As a guide it'll do around the 3.8 second mark to 100kph. 200 kph comes up on any shortish straight out of the city confines but it'll keep creeping up to an indicated 220. Interestingly the stock Battlax 014s will be the worst mileage I've ever got from a rear tyre even though all my other bikes have been bigger and heavier. Back to Michelin Pilot 2CTs next time. This rear will only see out maybe 5,500-6,000 kms even though I ride smotthly and weigh around 85 kgs kitted up (187)lbs. I have chicken strips only 5 mm wide so that shows the confidence I have in its handling abilities. A bit of trackwork and I'm sure it'll be right down to the edge. As a commuter it is light and agile and will get 75-77mpg imperial (about 63-65 US). So on a trip at 110-120kph, now it's fully run-in I can see 250 miles from the 16L tank. Get a fully optioned bike if you can come up with the readies. On board computer in the last month has informed me of tyre pressure decrease (due to a nail in the rear) and a blown tail/stoplight... very good to know in both instances. Heated grips, centre stand, luggage rack, power socket have all been used on a regular basis too.

These are truly great bikes, plenty of power and torque. I have ridden the 800S but too much forward lean. I have owned the ST but could not get the 500+ mileage comfort zone mode for touring. Just bought a 800GS, quite a ride. Can't wait to ride the 800R, BUT, when will the 800RT hit the market BMW?, should be the perfect ride!

I had the F800R for a test drive for an hour. Its a very light bike and handles very well. The only problem on that bike is that it vibrates a lot, certainly due to the fact that its a 2 cylinder engine. You cant have it all but overall its a good compromise.

I don't know how much BMW 'compromised' in terms of making their bikes more "Japanese-y" and what ever got the engineers to thinking Japanese bikes were all that. The fact is that people invest in BMW for the legendary quality and 'weirdness' or so called quirckiness. If I want a Japanese bike, heck, I will buy a Japanese bike. This bike appears to be defaulting from things that are trademarks of BMW... I just don't know if I will do it...

I am on my 2nd F800ST, had a F800S for a loan bike for a week. You can't bet them! Mates R1200S & ST can't leave me behind & I often get them in the twisty bits. Can't wait for the F800R to arrive in NZ.

I own two F800. Don't let the numbers steer you away this is a very strong motor in a veyr comeptent package. I just hope I can steel a pair of wheel of this to supermoto my GS!!

This bike is designed primarily for stunting, not for speed, long rides or commuting. It is exceptionally balanced for this purpose and the use of a chain is needed to allow the most power for immediate response. A belt or shaft wouldn't suffice. This bike is indubitably the best bike available if this is what you want it for, just ask Chris Pfeiffer.

85BHP is more than enough horsepower for the open road, especially as it is a 360 parallel twin. Come on this isnt a track bike.

C'mon BMW, get real and give your bikes a decent size tank, some of us wanna ride further than the corner store. And what's with that zorst? So 90's, and a pain in the butt when it comes to fitting/carrying luggage, put it under the bike like on the 650 Kwakas.

Scruffy: Change the bars man?..you can do it yourself (I hope) Bikemaster line of bars are in the sub $20 range to find the right height and bend for you, then go sexy fatbar conversion later. Almost all motorcycles need some sort of modification to fit the individual rider.

Someone should clue BMW in. The F800ST has the handlebars too low and forward for long range comfort. This bike looks to have the same riding position. That is the only thing that kept me from buying the F-ST and will probably keep me from buying this bike. IF they come out with an inexpensive cure for the handlebars I'll be interested. The local dealer is cool to the idea of a handle bar swap-out. Wouldn't even price it. ??

Looks like BMW really means business lately, they have put out several bikes in recent years that I LIKE to look at. Still German techno charged, but coming along nicely! Don't think this model would sell well in US market, but that would please the few that would buy it, almost as much as they would be pleased w/the bike itself. BMW keep doing what you do, I for one like to see variety.

BMW has come up with the perfect "adult" streetfighter for those who aren't drawn to cruisers, track bikes, and wheelies. Plus, BMW offers seat options that make the bike suitable for any size rider. If BMW makes the pricing competitive with the Monster/Shiver/Street Triple, then I would certainly consider it.

This bike will be over $10,000 for sure. A Suzuki Bandit 1250 with ABS sells for less than $8,000, even though it weighs 100lbs less it cannot perform on the same level as the Bandit.

Hmm...I'm not sold on 87/63 hp/torque. Seems (in this day and age) that a 800 motor could/should be much more. A nice balance of power for street, though. I like the styling (although I'm more of a BMW "Lo-Rider" concept guy). Much better than the new "designers were on acid" 1300 naked. However...I think the "intake-into-faux tank" scoops look like awkward appendages. Maybe in all black would look better? I think it's a "nice" bike (about all BMW seems to conjure up these days). Hopefully the "Lo-Rider" will bring some excitement and emotion back into the BMW line...if they build it.

Is this quite similar to the k1200r or does it have a shorter base? Anyway if it is similar than it would be a great buy, also if it's power delivery is more than the 800s as promised. Hopefully BMW doesn't overprice it; keeping in mind that it has less than 90HP. There are many competitors out there and I have a feeling that this will be priced about $2-$3K higher than all of them. Of course that won't sway many away from the competition...

If it had fully adjustable USD forks & radial brakes it would be perfect; cost obviously BMW's decision for standard forks & brakes. Even as is appears to be closer to perfect than any other street bike for most riders. Can be tailored to almost any use, just like the old UJM's. Obvious competition is Triumph's Street Triple, both standard & new for '09 R models. The Triumph makes less torque, more power, weighs less & has lighter reciprocating mass. I'd estimate the Triumph would be preferred at track days & the F800R preferred on the street. I intend to ride both later. Riders complaining that BMW are overpriced are likely to have never owned one (I've owned two). The overall package must be considered including parts availability, the dealership experience, etc. BMW has constantly increased share & overall sales over the past several years. This doens't happen if the product is "overpriced" as some claim. If it was "overpriced" (in other words buyers could get the same overall quality of purchase & ownership experience) they'd loose share & overall sales, not increase as has been.

basically i see where bmw is going they want a piece of the ducati monster entry level/sv650 naked bike market. if you look at it that way this is basiclaly going to compete with both perfectly, naked bike with around the same hp ratings, similar looks similar ability to modify them, so long as they bring this thing in at around 8-9k they will be competing tiwth the ducati 696 and teh new sv650 and the other mid sized naked bikes. this bike will do fine but it has stiff competitiion.

BMW's paddle turn signal indicators are worthless. It's good to see them move to "standard" signals. Just another one of those things that BMW did differently just to be different,not because it was any better. Now let's just see how many thousands they overprice it by...

I love the look of this bike. I'm sure it is a lot of fun to ride like all the BMW 800's. I am also very disapointed about the switch to the japanese style turn indicator. The normal BMW turn indicator makes a lot more sense and much easier to use. Hopefully this doesn't trickle down to other BMW modles!!!

I think BMW could do well with this bike, because the engine is such a kick! I have ridden many F800S and F800ST models at the dealership I work at. Hopefully the pricing is competitive. One thing I do NOT understand, is the break from the turn signal switches current to other BMWs. There is nothing "quirky" about BMW turn signal swithes. I fact I think the current style makes perfect sense and all the other makers have it wrong (except Harley). I bet it has nothing more to do with progress other than costing less.

OMG! I want this bike. It is the perfect bike. I currently ride a 76 KZ900 (mostly stock) Streetfighter. As the economy gets worse and more and more riders learn the do not need 1200cc or bigger, this size will be the "Do Everything" choice. They day I buy a new bike...it's this one.
