The FMF Step Up Bike Stand makes getting
your dirt bike supported much easier once
you get the hang of slipping it underneath.
Pounding out a moto can make your hands cramp and arms and shoulders feel like limp noodles. When that’s the case, hoisting your bike onto its stand is less appealing than another trip through the whoop section. FMF Racing has a solution, the FMF Step Up Bike Stand. This simple contraption takes the back-breaking labor out of balancing your bike.

The stand is built from cast aluminum and uses a hard, smooth rubber pad on the surface to support the bike. When compressed, the stand measures 12.5 inches and extends to 16 inches – enough to slip underneath with little effort and boost your machine completely off the ground. A few bolts and some Loctite hold it together and there’s no bearings or lubricants to gum up operations. A trio of set screws can be loosened to adjust how the top plate is positioned.

Operation is about as simple as it gets, so if you can’t figure this one out then the whole clutch, throttle and balance thing is probably out of your league. In order to get your bike’s wheels in the air just slip the stand underneath the frame and step on the foot lever. Taking some weight off by lifting on the rear fender makes it a little easier, but the leverage ratio works fine. A longer foot lever would make it slightly easier, but it would also make the stand more cumbersome. Once it’s time to ride again, popping the stand loose is simple and fast. Again, take pressure off by lifting the bike slightly and then lift up on the foot lever with your toe. Once it goes, there’s no stopping it, so make sure there isn’t anything in the way, including your shin because the FMF unit crashes down abruptly under the weight of a bike.

Overall the FMF stand works great. Nudging it under the frame rails and stomping the lever is a lot easier than throwing out your back by heaving the full weight of a muddy dirt bike. It’s simple, durable, goes together easily and doesn’t have the headaches or weight of a hydraulic system. Once you get the hang of slipping it under with your boot, the FMF stand does all the heavy lifting for you.

There is not a current SM model available. With the smaller wheels, the stand will not slip underneath without some lifting on the bike. However, I have heard of riders cutting down the stand tubes with a simple hacksaw in order to make it work for mini bikes. This would probably work for a SM as well, though I have not tried it personally. There are no hydraulics - it's basically a tube sliding over a slightly smaller tube, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. The only issue is the set screw groove and possibly that the foot lever would hit the top plate and/or engine components in the lowered position. Modify at your own risk... and then let us know how it works!

What about supermotos? Do they have a unit for that?
