There are very few who will deny that Stefan Everts is the best sand rider in the world. His MX Training and Racing Techniques DVD offers some insight on how he achieved that status.
The Score
Ten-time World Motocross champion, Stefan Everts, knows a thing or two about how to ride fast. Freshly retired, Everts has turned his attention to sharing his knowledge with other riders. Volume 1 of his MX Training and Racing Techniques (out of three) focuses on the one area where he is considered untouchable - sand. These tracks provide a unique set of challenges and as arguably the best sand rider in the world, Everts is the foremost expert on proper form. Class is in session.
The Scoop
This film has, by far, the most impressive camera work we've seen on a motorcycle film, much less a tutorial. I-Movix extreme slow motion footage was our personal favorite. It provides such detail that you can actually see the throbbing of the engine, and each individual burst of exhaust from the Akropovic muffler. Several unique helmet and on-board camera angles keep things fresh throughout, including a remote-control helicopter Flying Cam. Much of the riding and race footage from Everts' 101 Grand Prix victories is done in black and white which also offers a different, but attractive, look.
The main menu is divided into four sections: Bike set-up, Technique, Mechanics and Bonus material. Each division is broken down further to various degrees, but each segment is short enough that we were comfortable restarting and watching an entire section over again without needing to fiddle with fast-forward or rewind.
Though Everts handles all the riding content and much of the set-up segments, he isn't alone in this 50-minute instructional. Wilfried Van Miel, WP's Off-Road Suspension Coordinator, runs through the basics of suspension tuning which is very informative. Gareth Edmunds, Factory Red Bull KTM Technician goes over the techniques and importance of proper bike washing, air filter maintenance (using Twin Air products), tire selection (Pirelli) and race-day checks.
The Sentence
Director Oliver Imfeld guided the production team around the Lommel and Olmen racetracks with thoroughness. Soundtrack genius, Praga Khan, melds pulsing, up-tempo Euro dance music that work surprisingly well with the video content. Understanding the meaning of the Europeans' broken English is more fun than annoying, and the film as a whole fosters a desire to go out and practice the teachings of this MX hero. Pay attention. If you choose not to, at least the film angles will be enough to make this an entertaining classroom session.
