MX vs. ATV Reflex Game Review

Wednesday, December 23, 2009
MX vs. ATV: Reflex
The MX vs. ATV series has
returned with some new features.
It has been a while since the last game in the MX vs. ATV series came out, and gamers are treated to a complete overhaul from the ground up. The key feature of this new game, and the title itself, is “Reflex”.

Reflex has been added to give more control over rider positioning as you race the Dirt Bikes and ATVs. This new system allows you to take corners a bit sharper and adds a level of realism to the series. There is a learning curve with this new system but after some practice it becomes second nature. Despite my poor thumb coordination I was able to yield some close wins. With this new reflex system comes a new system for tricks as well. Gone are the days of mashing buttons and moving your arrow keys in a frantic mess to do a trick. You now have a button to push while in the air and then moving the Reflex joy stick in combinations of directions to perform the trick.

MX vs. ATV: Reflex Supercross
Plenty of Bar to Bar Supercross action with Dirt Bikes or ATVs.
Game play is fairly quick paced, as is expected from off-road racing. Reflex offers many styles of racing to choose from to satisfy the needs of any dirt racing enthusiast. The racing styles ranges from the traditional motocross/supercross racing, off-road point to point, freestyle, and the mash of everything called omnicross. Each style of racing allows gamers to choose the type of vehicle to race. Most events are limited to just ATV/UTV and Dirt Bikes but there are select maps that allow Baja trucks and buggies. If a track is too difficult for the first choice, players can switch to a different vehicle. When starting the race again everyone will be racing the same style of vehicle as you. Trucks and buggies are a different sort of experience, mostly because they are pretty much indestructible and rarely do you find our self in a situation where you can’t get out of. In Omnicross trucks and buggies tend to dominate and it seemed rare for an ATV or dirt bike up front due to how much larger and powerful the trucks are.

MX vs. ATV Reflex delivers a good selection of outdoor tracks to choose from and more air than you can shake a stick at.

MX vs. ATV: Reflex - Omnicross
Omnicross can be more demolition derby than race as trucks lose body panels and vehicles swap paint.
MX vs. ATV: Reflex - Buggie and Trophy Trucks

Overall the game plays well, looks great and for the most part has many of the features players expect out of a game of this caliber. Those looking for more customization will be rewarded with different color options for just about every piece of dirt bike gear imaginable even down to wearing a neck brace or chest protector. Rest assured gamers can have a unique look all your own with the amount of options at your finger tips.

One feature that could have been added is a “rewind” feature to correct a big mistake during a race, similar to the feature encountered in DiRT 2. While the rewind feature is more of a luxury, it has become almost standard in many recent racing games and would have saved a lot of early frustration as I got used to the reflex feature. There is a vehicle reset but it you have to hold a combination of buttons rather than a quick push of a single button to get yourself back on the track. I tended to find myself stuck in situations where the game wouldn’t automatically reset me to the course but left me to flail till I could find a way out or wander off course enough to force it to put me back. While this can be irritating, eventually gamers start to play with this in mind and ride a bit more carefully to avoid these situations (easier said than done considering how hectic races can get).
MX vs. ATV: Reflex - Freestyle
Reflex has a fairly extensive list of tricks you can perform including the Hart Attack.

The long list of tracks and unlockable events will keep players racing for a good long time. With online play and online mini games available you can keep racing in the off season of your favorite two or four-wheeled racing series.

All told, the updates made in Reflex create a solid platform for the MX vs. ATV series to grow from. So for those searching for a dirt bike or off-road racing game, look no further than MX vs. ATV Reflex.

were do i start.. this game is cool because its something completly new, but its far from perfect, at first i hated the reflex controls because they were hard as hell to get used to, now i love it but there a few flaws in this games for one lets start with the engine sounds, the 2 strokes i guess sound ok but i think all the four strokes sound like shit, it sounds nothing like my 450f, i wish they kept the pit bikes because common who didnt ride those in unleashed, i wish you could trick out your bike more like more defined graphics and mod out your engine done to the piston you use. with that said i hate how you bounce around everywhere, its hard as hell to get back on the track because there so many tough blocks, and is it just me or does it seem like the riders try and make you crash, the ruts are cool but they often mess me up, the trucks suck bad, they need to spend more time on the real physics on how a bike realy handles on the track, i hope for better graphics, not that their bad but i think they can do better, and the free ride is sooooo boring, and has anyone noticed how james stuart is the slowest rider lol i just think thats ironic, and where the heck is chad reed, i hope that the new alive game is better, reflex is a great game and i love how its completly diferent, their on the right track also i think the riders need to look more relaxed they look kinda stiff the track looks good but the far back graound looks kinda choppy, it just more time spent on the physics, maybe ryan dungey will be in the new game, i wonder why the shima 250 2 stroke is the best bike, as a matter of fack all the 2 strokes are better, bring back the pitbikes! crashing is way too easy

Unfortunately the only options I noticed were different colors and designs on some of the bikes but didn't see any options to modify the bikes with parts. You can design the rider's gear more than you can the bikes.

Can you do up yout bikes? like untamed?
Kevin -Pig with Lipstick  January 19, 2010 12:00 PM
I have been playing this game non-stop since I bought it a few weeks ago. And I have to say it is great AND it sucks horribly. (a bit of info: I win almost every race with the difficulty on the highest) The graphics are great. The way you make ruts and use them next lap is great. The double control stick is great. The fact that you can tune your bike and customize the looks is great. But the greatness ends there. The bad part. The bike bounces off of everything. I mean everything. Just tapping another rider will send you into a backflip or barrel roll that ends in a crash(very annoying at the start of each race, although I wouldn't car about a bad start if I had more than 3 laps). Tapping a hay bale causes a front flip crash. If you come up 6 inches short on a gap you bounce back in the air and thus have no speed to make the next gap(in real motox the suspension will just soak that up and keep the tires on the ground). When you aren't going 80mph through whoops the bike bounces like a superball over them. If you don't gap a jump fully(it happens) then you are screwed, there is no way to pick up momentum for the next jump, no matter how small it is. You will see in real motox and even previous mx vs atv games that you can roll over a jump, gas it done the other side, and gain enough speed to gap the next jump. At first I thought the crash avoidance was great. Until I started playing a lot. It becomes annoying. When you slightly over jump a gap it take the whole flat section to stop the crash, you lose all your speed, and cant make the next gap, causing you to crash anyways or resulting in the above mentioned lack of momentum. Ruts in the most part are great. They are cool and help you turn. Usually. Once in a while there is a rut going straight up a jump and I will be going straight up the jump and the rut will launch me way off to the side, off the track and receive a 5 second penalty. Speaking of penalties, you may sometimes go off the track on accident, not to cheat, and then can NOT get back on the track becase there are 10 million hay bales blocking you. It often takes 10 seconds to get back on, resulting in a 10 second penalty.WTF? And there is no way to reset yourself back onto the track. The only way to make the gaps in the game is to take the widest turn possible. Very rare are there narrow turn paths. Often there are in real life. SO the outside gets extremely rutted and you can't carry speed through it. And a loss of about 1mph through a turn results in you casing 90% of the jumps right after turns. Tuning: I like tuning and buying performance parts but what does it do? I can gap everything my fully upgraded 450f can do on a bone stock 125. I will tune my bike from full acceleration to full top speed and not notice a thing on a MX track. (and a small thing, why does a Powercore+Gnarly make more power than a Titanium2+FactoryFatty? And why does a PC+Gnarly cost $1500 when it is $330 in real life? And a Factory4.1 system costs $1500 and in real life it is $900?Not to mention the price of bikes and the fact that you make so much money it doesn't even matter anyways.) Oh one more complaint. Where is the RACE SERIES? There are individual races and once you get to National/Supercross series 3 the individual race setup is good(qualify, last chance,2 motos, heats, main event) but there is no SERIES. I want a series of 10 races or so where at each race my points add up for a series win. Not just individual races. That way I can not win every race and still be battling for the title. (and make the AI consistent since they never were before) And I should also be able to create my own series with my own order of the races, number of laps, and mix Nationals with Supercross, etc. (I could do that with my Formula 1 game back in 2002) Also this game is called MX VS ATV. NOT MX vs ATV vs Buggy vs Trophy Truck. Get the stupid trucks out of the game. I bought Baja Edge of Control to drive trucks. I buy MX vs ATV do ride DIRT BIKES. The trucks in this game SUCK. They handle like $h!t and I hate using them. I just want my dirt bike. That is why I buy this game. Half there time they spent developing Turcks and buggies, truck race tracks, Omnicross, etc. If they spent all that time developing better physics, bikes, and MOTOCROSS/SUPERCROSS tracks this would be a damn amazing game. I have to say I can't stop playing it because it is the ONLY MX game. Although I just get pissed off and am more angry than happy while playing it. I would prefer better control and better gameplay with more difficult AI. MX vs ATV has never had hard enough AI. If they just dumped the trucks/buggies/UTVs and used all that time and money developing Bikes, ATVs and MX/SX tracks they would have an amazing game.

A true motocrosser will love this game
Bryan -MX vs. ATV is really dissapointing  January 2, 2010 02:27 PM
I have enjoyed all the previous versions of MX and MX vs ATV, but this new version is not all that great. Rent before you buy.
As the other comments, freeride areas totaly suck and the physics are bad. The free ride ares are limited and terrain is very tough. The physics need more refinement. The game has some nice new upgrades but lakes refinement. I was also dissapointed in the lack of controller settings.
MCUSA - Richard -Re:  December 31, 2009 08:59 AM
Jake - Sorry to hear you didn't find my review very informative. I will say that rewind feature was more of a cry for something so I can reset my rider to the course and not spend my race stuck on an obstacle (seems all these games with the rewind has made my couch racing skills soft). I didn't come across jerky frame rates or any situations where the game locked up. The game does have some bugs here and there but I wouldn't go so far as delaying it six months or scraping it. Overall I found the game to be entertaining with a side of occasional frustration.

Tim - I agree that the AI could use a bit of work but I didn't encounter the kamikaze (cept omnicross if that counts). All I noticed was the AI didn't seem to know how to ride an ATV with out crashing in each corner. The Terrain deformation was an interesting feature but I really didn't find it to have much of an effect on racing. I think there was a lot of focus on this new Reflex system and terrain deformation that some other areas got a bit neglected and could use improvement but overall it should prove to be a good platform for future releases.
Jake -Reviews are supposed to be informative  December 31, 2009 03:46 AM
If you aren't going to be informative with your reviews you really aren't doing your readers any good. MX vs Reflex has so many bugs and issues that it should have been delayed by 6 months if not scrapped altogether.

Whether or not you like the reflex control (I don't mind it) or the lack of focus (I really wish it was just MX instead of all the other vehicles) is a matter of personal preference. I even disagree about the need for a rewind feature as I think it's a pretty tame excuse for people not wanting to put the time in to learn to race (where's the gratification of earning a hard fought win, when you can simply rewind and piece together vitories?)

But things like the bad physics that have the bikes flying all over the place at will. Or a framerate that constantly up and down when the game doesn't lockup briefly. Inconsistent controls. Limited options setup wise. Those items can't be over looked.

MX vs Reflex suffers from a lack of direction and focus and quite simply bad programming. there is no reason for a game with the backing/resources that it has to turn out so poorly. The game can't decide if it wants to be a sim or arcade game and it fails completely at both.
Tim B -Reflex is Disappointing  December 24, 2009 09:40 PM
I love the MX vs ATV series so I preordered this game so that I could pick it up the day it came out. I was, and still am, extremely disappointed! The new graphics are really good and the terrain deformation is awesome if a little extreme and fake. The controls are a great idea, but they need to be refined. I can't explain it, but they're hard to get used to.

The worst part of this game is that the AI is still Kamikaze. They don't race the track and try to beat you. Instead, they take every opportunity to run you off the track or make you crash. It goes way above and beyond hard racing. This is the easy way out and Rainbow has done this all along for the series. They need to step up and make the racers race to beat you.

Another horrible disappointment is the lack of freeride areas. There are only a handful. Yes, they are larger, but some of them plain suck and are so boring that I don't even use them. The previous MX vs ATV offered so many more areas. And you can't even free ride on the tracks you unlock. You can race with the computer, but you can't ride on them alone like in the past. And Rainbow decides which vehicles you can and can't use on each track. You should be allowed to ride or race with any vehicle after they're unlocked! Also, the vehicle customization options have been reduced. For example, you only have one or two choices of plastic colors when it comes to bikes and quads.

And I'm really bummed they took the pitbikes out of the game.

Overall, it's a good game, but the replay value is low because of the lack of freeride areas and tracks. Plus, as I started earlier, the AI makes the game very frustrating.

This is the best MX vs ATV yet, but at the same time it's the worst. I beat all of the game except for the freeride areas, of which the tasks are boring, and now I barely want to play it. I couldn't get enough of Unleashed and Untamed. I constantly played those up until the day the new version of MX vs ATV was released.

So far most places still say TBA like you mention. I did notice one news story (and Amazon.co.uk) list a Febuary 5th 2010 for the UK release of MX vs ATV Reflex.
