HARLEY-DAVIDSON TRI GLIDE TO ESCORT PRESIDENT-ELECT BARACK OBAMA ON INAUGURATION DAY

On Jan. 20, 2009, at 12 p.m. President-elect Barack Obama will be sworn into office as the 44th President of the United States. Leading the way will be a Police Motorcycle escort riding a one-of-a-kind 2009 Harley-Davidson Police concept Tri Glide Ultra Classic.

The Tri Glide is a production three-wheeler that shares the classic styling traits of Harley’s popular luxury touring motorcycle, the Electra Glide Ultra Classic. It is powered by a Twin Cam 103 V-Twin Engine with H-D’s Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. During the 2009 Harley-Davidson model year launch, it was mentioned that the Tri Glide would be an excellent platform for emergency personnel with its abundance of storage space and its versatility.

Lieutenant Scott Fear, Commander of the U.S. Park Police Motorcycle Unit, will lead the parade from the Capitol to the White House aboard the Police concept Tri Glide. He will be joined by a dozen Electra Glide Ultra Classics that have been specially-equipped with sidecars by Harley-Davidson of Frederick out of Maryland.

According to owner Mike Vantucci’s web interview, this is the fifth inauguration that H-D of Frederick has been selected by the Inaugural Committee to assemble motorcycles for the event. The bikes each undergo about 40 hours of in-house customization. The process includes equipping them with special bezels for police radios, lights, mic and flag holders and bumpers.

The Harley-Davidsons will ride in the famous 'V' formation and will lead the entourage of the Inaugural Parade as it makes its way down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Who ever the "Motor Man- Are you kidding me?" really has a attitude. He's just jealeous of the great job the PP motorcyle unit does and the great looking uniforms we have. He's probably never ridden a motorcyle, or if he has he hasn't ridden one year-round. The Park Police motors are out there in all kinds of weather and not ridding in cars during the winter. The comment "The Secret Service protects the POTUS" is correct, not the Uniformed Divison. UD officers come on the job thinking of the great STATUS they have, and they can tell their friends they protect the President. When in reality they are just sitting on their asses watching the people walk by. They evenutally get tired of that and they get the OK from Management to start wondering outside the fence. Then they start making traffic stops while driving from embassy to embassy. Then they start patrolling the Elispe on some small bikes . I left before they got motorcycles. What in the world do they need motorcyles for. They Secrect Service made Pennsylvania Ave. a parking lot. The UD has more men sitting around on their asses waiting on that BIG MOMENT, each shift then the PP has out patrolling all over the Metro area. I hope Chief Lauro can get the department back up to full strenght, and the officers can be proud, once again, to wear the Park Police uniform.
former USPP motor -USPP USSSUD  January 25, 2009 02:34 PM
I was a Park Police motorman when USSUD first started their unit. I never had a problem with anybody. MPD, USPP and USSSUD all protect POTUS and VPOTUS during motorcades. I don't know why there seems to be so much anger and biterness there. Used to be a time when all cops bled blue and took care of each other, sure there was some good natured rivalry but not the ugliness I've seen lately on both sides. Oh well, I guess it's a different generation of lawmen these days.
Charlie Stebbins -Only the Park Police Motors  January 24, 2009 02:40 PM
My father, Charlie Stebbins Jr., spent many years riding the HD, from the old kick start with advance to the new models. Only the Park Police ride for work and handle the traffic and when needed escort the President. I guess the UDSS when not around the reservation one might get out into traffic - oh yea to get fuel or service! The USPP have always lead the way for working the HD year round, from traffic, to crime, to demonstrations, to escorts. They are the best on the best.

Go Park Police!! You are and always have been the BEST!! Great job on Tuesday!
Old Motor One -USPP Motorcycles in Inaugural Parade  January 22, 2009 03:26 PM
Before I retired in 1981 I had the honor to be a USPP motorman for 8 years; 3 as a Private and 5 as a Sergeant. I see the conflict as to who is the greatest is still alive and well but happy to see as it has always been by the very few narrow minded. We all had our jobs to do (uniformed division did not have motors then) and we jabbed at each other frequently but when it came time to do our job we worked together and got the job done.
Stepping in Line -In Perspective  January 22, 2009 02:56 PM
Yeah, your right USSS does protect the President, but USSS-UD guards the residences. Last time I saw, US Park Police and Metro were doing motorcades for the President since the 20's, USSS-UD started having motorcycles in 2001. Besides, MPD has about 40 motorcycles, US Park has about 35, and UD has 12. US Park has a lot more people and experience per rider to evaluate motorcycles
ClayRice -UDSS  January 22, 2009 04:21 AM
Harley Rider and Motorpsycho44 - I am not sure where you guys are but I have not seen a UDSS motorcycle officer lead a presidential escort yet - maybe I am wrong but the USPP have been leading the president around DC for a long time
Motor Man -Are you kidding me?  January 15, 2009 09:36 AM
Well I see that the USPP (United States Press Police) are up to their usual tricks. What would we do without them? Every other department takes care of their OWN bikes in preperation for the parade. Who are they kidding? And as far as that "Trike" being used as an emergency vehicle? That is one of the most dangerous vehicles to drive at higher speeds. One quick turn and you're toast. Once again USPP, you try to look good but are useless. Keep up the good "PR".
Motor 36 -Crash Bars  January 13, 2009 10:32 PM
Why does a trike have crash bars? I can see a whole new segment in the Rodeo.

"The bikes each undergo about 40 hours of in-house customization. The process includes equipping them with special bezels for police radios, lights, mic and flag holders and bumpers." It's good to see tax money well spent. It's a shame the government has to cut it's spending like the mom and pop shops...
MOTORrider -TRI Glide  January 13, 2009 08:32 AM
I think that a Motor Officer that actually rides in the motorcades should be leading and riding this thing.
Harley Rider -Harley Riders  January 13, 2009 07:56 AM
This Harley should have been ridden by a Uniformed Division Secret Service Motorcyle Officer not park police. The Secret Service protects the POTUS not park police
Motorpsycho44 -Should have given it to the Uniformed Division Secret Service  January 13, 2009 04:12 AM
Probably would have gotten more publicity if given to the Uniformed Division Secret Service.
