Icon's Speed Cretin Tackles Wall of Death
Wednesday, September 02, 2009

I remember owning this card, along with a stack of other cool Odd Rods bubblegum cards. Something tells me the guys who work at Icon collected them, too.
I’m starting to believe the crazy cast responsible for creating the wild graphics for
Icon Helmets must have collected the same Odd Rods bubblegum cards as I did. Icon’s latest
Speed Cretin helmet looks like it came straight from the
Odd Rods trading cards I collected growing up in the ‘70s. You know the ones – colorful, crazy-looking monsters with silly expressions on their faces riding souped-up, tire-shredding hot rods with a dried-up, super-sweet stick of gum in the pack. Boy, those were the days.

The Icon Speed Cretin Helmet
Icon may have outdone itself with its Speed Cretin helmet. Its latest lid not only has the dope graphics, but it’s also got horns. Move over guys with the faux Mohawks on their helmets, the horny toad Speed Cretin is coming through. I’m sure it won’t be long before I see someone lane-splitting on the 405 sporting the Cretin.
Fun and funky, underneath the outlandish look is a legitimate lid. The Alliance SSR helmet meets American DOT standards, European ECE standards, and Japan’s SG mandate. The Speed Cretin’s ‘two stabilizing’ fins that have been hydronamically tested. Now if Icon could just figure out how to get smoke to come out of the end of the horns, fire-breathing dragon-style, they'd sell faster than they could make 'em.
To boot, Icon made a campy little video featuring a fictional character called the Cretin and the popular motorcycle rally attraction, the Wall of Death. Icon built a bike for the Cretin to ride while attempting to conquer the Wall of Death wearing the Speed Cretin. Needless to say, the company’s got a good sense of humor. Check out the video yourself to see what I mean.
I read that Odd Rods is making a comeback, too. Just in time. My five-year-old boy will love them.
