Motorcycle Crash Grim Reminder in Safety Video

Thursday, October 22, 2009
Gotta love the Aussies. They’re not ones to water things down as evidenced by this video made by Australia’s Transport Accident Commission (TAC). Reminds me of the ‘Scared Straight’ programs they used to televise when I was growing up where they took young kids that were repeatedly getting in trouble with the law and took them to prison for a little one-on-one time with the inmates. Nothing opens up one’s eyes better than a harsh dose of reality.

The video demonstrates that in cases of car vs. motorcycles, cars always win. We may be quicker and more nimble, but we’re also more vulnerable.

"The TAC wants Victorian motorcyclists to understand that regardless of who is at fault in a road crash, it will be the motorcyclist who will come out second best," said TAC’s Phil Reed.

At the end of the video, the intentions of the TAC flash across the screen.

“It’s up to you to reduce the risks.”

Riding on the street, you can’t afford to let your guard down, not even for a second. It’s dangerous enough out there, and the video demonstrates that it only takes one moment of indiscretion to turn a good day’s ride into a fatal mistake. Think while you ride and stay alive.

Kinda of overkill don't you think. Every rider in this video made every mistake in the book. I agree with x2468.

If I made that many stupid decisions in 30 seconds i'd expect to be dead anyway.

I've been riding for about 25 years, and I want to make it to beyond 70. I've had my share of accidents from which I have learned a lot. And I'm always willing to talk about safe lane placement and using your lights and horn to help cagers and fellow 2 -wheelers be aware of you. One thing I always tell people contemplating getting a bike is; "Just remember, riding a motorcycle is an exercise in restraint"!

I like the tag line too - while it is absolutely up to us to reduce the risks (and I like the hard hitting style and message) maybe ads like this will help raise awareness of motorcycles in the rest of the population too.

there are some bikers out there that need to weight their defensive style more to decrease the risk of these actions happening more often...i know riders like this, and see more of them in CA where one can split lanes...if you ride like this on the street, then one should know that things like this are almost inevitable. RIDE SAFE brothers...keep the stats down!
