American Suzuki Lays Off Press Dept.

American Suzuki reportedly laid off its press relations department today.
More bad news coming out of American Suzuki today. Motorcycle USA’s Road Editor, Adam Waheed, tried to e-mail one of his contacts at American Suzuki and got a the dreaded ‘please redirect future correspondence to MCPressRelations’ message. An attempt to e-mail American Suzuki’s head of press relations, Garrett Kai, received the same reply.

Word is that the entire press relations department got the axe. This comes on the heels of layoffs back in April when American Suzuki reduced its US workforce by over 15% of its staff, which affected an estimated 95 of the 570 total jobs at its Brea, California HQ. Suzuki’s presence at the recent Tokyo Motor Show was also minimized, with green technology like the plug-in Hybrid Suzuki Swift automobile and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles taking precedence over motorcycles like the popular GSX-R.

What will become of American Suzuki’s press relations department is unknown.

Samxrl - Tough times!  October 30, 2009 09:06 AM
Here's a thought: How about Suzuki (and the three other manufacturers from Japan) actually keeping the prices of their motorcycles the same or GOD forbid--lowering them. They raise prices by at least $500.00 across the board and wonder why units aren't selling in this tough economy? It's a shame the workerbees get the axe from stupid decisions made by the upper brass!!! Isn't the law of "Supply vs Demand" taught oversees?

Six people from Parts and Accesories also got the axe that day.

Press relations, public relations, marketing, and sales departments are usually oversized at companies to begin with. They should be the first departments to be downsized since they're obviously not doing their jobs if sales are down, but usually it's the people who actually get work done and products made (production workers and engineers) that get the axe first. I'll never understand that mentality. But for a whole department to get laid off is insane.
