Harley CEO Receives $6.4 Million Pay Package

Monday, March 15, 2010
Harley-Davidson CEO Keith Wandell
Harley-Davidson CEO Keith Wandell received a $6.4 million dollar pay package in less than a full year on the job.
The newest leader of American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson, Keith Wandell, received a pay package valued at $6.4 million in 2009, according to a regulatory filing. The majority of it comes in the form of stock and option awards, which tally up to $4.9 million. His base salary, starting from May 1 and ending Dec. 31, was $650,025, to go along with a bonus of $780,030. Other compensations for the Harley CEO totaled $22,515. Not a bad chunk of change for only eight months of work.

Wandell took over for James L. Ziemer, who headed The Motor Company for four years but was with H-D for 40 years. Ziemer lived and breathed Harley-Davidson. Wandell’s appointment wasn’t without controversy. Wandell was formerly the chief operating officer at Johnson Controls Inc., where he worked for 21 years. Johnson Controls Inc. has built its reputation by making ventilation systems for buildings and car batteries. Heck, Wandell even admitted on a Q&A with Trading Markets.com that he rode motorcycles when he was young, but wasn’t even necessarily a motorcyclist at the time of his hiring.

This report comes on the heels of Harley-Davidson’s dismal 2009 financial results. The company finished with a $55.1 million net loss on the year and a fourth quarter net loss of $218.7 million. The company also axed Buell Motorcycles, is looking to sell MV Agusta, a company it purchased but never developed, and enacted widespread company layoffs. Only restructured contracts and the willingness of the townspeople of York, Pennsylvania to compromise or face a full plant closure saved the long-time Harley plant there.

Wandell has also been an elusive figure. Our proposal for an interview and an opportunity to give a rebuttal to the Erik Buell interview we published was denied, and when I saw Wandell recently at the Harley-Davidson Ride In Custom Bike Show he conveniently disappeared while I was trying to write down a few questions to ask Harley’s new CEO. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

I’m sure Wandell has paid his dues and deserves big money. He stepped in at a difficult time in The Motor Company’s history and its current financial situation is not his fault. I understand his base salary and the stock options he was awarded, but what has he done so far to warrant a $780,030 bonus? I wonder how this sits with the workers in York. And being a CEO of a company is all about accountability. I’m not the only one with questions for Wandell, but as far as I know, he hasn’t granted interviews with any other publications, either.

What about it, Keith? We’d love to talk to you. Inquiring minds want to know more about you and your vision for the company. Hit me up sometimes. I bark, but usually I don’t bite.

The titanic is sinking and they are paying the ships captain a huge salary with bonus.Keith Wandell wins short term, Victory motorcycles win long term!

Nice try Bryan but good luck getting an interview. He might grant an interview to a financial news outlet, but he clearly knows nothing about motorcycles so I'm sure he wants to stay away from people who will ask actual motorcycle questions. Maybe if you promised to keep the conversation focused on their upcoming clothing line?

I think shutting down Buell was dumb, but not selling them was a crime against America.

He can't be gone too soon for me.

I'd rather see Harley struggling under the leadership of someone who a thing or two about bikes than thriving under the leadership of an empty suit like Wandell.

Ok, so we know that he is the typical overpayed executive that believes he is entitled to it.

I am still shaking my head over the purchase of MV and then the closing of Buell. I have been around Harley my entire life (all 47 years) and I will never understand the way the do business.

The trick of displaying a certain salery for a job then giving bonuses of more than the salary goes back a while. The CEO's of several companies I worked for before and the City I work for now use this practice. They claim to be cutting back on everone but they conviently forget the bonuses. If a company is loosing money what do you give a bonus for? Showing up? Planning on a turnaround? Bottom line if the company you are working for is loosing money then you are not doing your job good enough. I don't see how someone can take the money with the company having to cut pay on the rank and file. We have several Johnson control systems at my plant and they are amoung the most problomatic systems we have. HD I am unimpressed, but thats nothing new. Maby you will come out with another sporster and paint it black and orange....thats orininal

It's stupid to blame some one for honoring the contract agreement that was approved by the BoD of the company. Why aren't you up set about all of the money that the state an federal thugs steal from you every year? It was gov't. policy that led to the economic collapse. Oh,well you get what you deserve and asked for!

Harley Davidson is a great company. I've been riding Harley's for 24 years. As far as corporate bonuses are concerned, they should only be issued when profits are up not down.
nutty -HD Recalls? March 15, 2010 08:45 PM
How come you didn't mention the 111,569 global recalls related to fuel tank mounting? I'm sure if this was a piece on Toyota's boss, their recalls would have littered the article. HD spend a lot on advertising?

I don’t think it really matters if he rides or not because they have other employees that take care of product, sales, marketing and etc. His job is to make “global decisions” or in other words big picture strategy decisions for the long and medium term. $780,030 bonus is a lot but it is pocket change compared to the $40,000,000 that the former head of GM, Rick Wagoner, received and he bankrupted GM…niccccce.

Sure GM is much bigger than Harley but do you think any CEO would take the job and not want/take a big bonus? This is nothing new ALL CEOs do this. It even happens to businesses like Home Depot; CEOs taking huge bonuses and leaving the company in shambles. Look at Wall st.

I am not defending this guy he is a typical greedy executive but I also don’t think it is news worthy pointing out the obvious or what is standard operating procedure in top management of big companies.

Who cares what the workers at the York plant think because whether Wandell takes his bonus or not $780,030 would not have spared any grief or changed any decisions/outcomes.

What would make better news would be interviewing the previous management that allowed Harley to be in the mess they are in now and ask them for some accountability. The new guy won’t answer any questions because he has no answers especially one pertaining to the mess they are in now. He took his bonus because why not. He figures why should I be punished for other person’s mistakes. He may have made some mistakes already and will in the future but that never affects the bonus payout.

they are also closing down the testing facilities in Naples, Fl (florida evaluation center) and Licoln, Al (talladega testing facitity) which they own buildings on both, to move everything to arizona to a test track which they rent from. Harley has lost around 3000 workers since 2008 and gives a huge bonus to the new CEO. something was up in 2008 when they fired 700 employees and anounced they were buying MV Augusta the SAME WEEK.
Cal H -Another CEO looting his company March 15, 2010 06:16 PM
On a yearly basis this works out to a little less than 10 million a year, or 2.5 times what Buell's loss was scheduled to be for 2009. So Wandell authorizes 126 million dollars to close Buell rather than take a projected loss of under 4 million, and later admits that Harley did no financial analysis whatsoever of any projected savings. This guy has no clue about the motorcycle industry and they are paying him 3/4 of a million in bonus? Is the board out of their minds?
jay -wandell March 15, 2010 03:03 PM
sorry wandell didn't deserve any bonus, he didn't do anything for the company so he should get is base salary and that is it. you shoul dnot be so nice talking to someone who did nothing for a lot of pay. he is scum plain and simple.
