Gulf Oil Spill Won't Stop Bikers

The Mighty Mississippi runs through the heart of New Orleans and deposits into the Gulf of Mexico where an oil spill threatens to be one of the worst ecological disasters fathomable. Motorcyclists may not be able to lay down containment booms, but we can still help the region out by showing up for Bike Week New Orleans and injecting the area with some needed income and positive energy.
By now everybody is aware of the tragic situation in the Gulf of Mexico. Lives have been lost, they’ve got an uncontrollable oil well spewing hundreds of thousands of gallons of the thick gooey stuff into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico daily and it doesn’t appear that they’re going to be able to cap that thing to turn off the flow any time soon. The diverse wildlife of the Louisiana marshlands is in jeopardy and a region that has already undergone one of the worst natural disasters in recent memory is again under siege.
Most of us are already embroiled in the 9-5 and have mouths to feed at home. The majority of us lives hundreds if not thousands of miles away and volunteering to wash oil sludge off seabirds on weekends or helping lay containment booms in the Gulf isn’t feasible. So how can we, as motorcyclists, help out?
This week, the Big Easy is holding a little celebration called
Bike Week New Orleans. What we can do is show up in force, fill their hotels, spend money at their gas stations and restaurants, and bring some positive energy to the area. Don’t let the black blob alter your plans. If you were planning on attending, then make sure you still go. If you weren’t planning on attending and live within riding distance, get your butt on down to New Orleans. Bikers are filled with much of the same spirit as the people of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. We both share a resiliency and a dogged determination to ride out the storm, regardless of the circumstances. The best thing we could do to help the city right now is to show up in droves, inject some revenue into the area, and if by chance you’re inspired to do more, see if you can volunteer some services.
Jay Allen and the Broken Spoke Saloon crew have been working hard to plan out the party for Bike Week New Orleans. Don’t let a year’s worth of their hard work go to waste. They’ve got the bands and entertainment lined up, vendors have paid for their spaces, and the party needs to go on. Get it in gear and head on down to the Big Easy. I guarantee you won’t regret it.
