200 York Harley-Davidson Employees Cut

Friday, June 25, 2010

Times are tough at Harley-Davidson's York Plant as 200 union workers learned that this week would be their last with the company.
The axe is falling at Harley-Davidson’s York plant. The latest round of job cuts at the Springettsbury Township plant has commenced, this time at the expense of 200 union production workers, who learned that this week would be their last with the company. The York plant’s workforce, which once stood approximately 2800 strong, has quickly dwindled since workers were given the ultimatum to approve a new contract with The Motor Company or face outright plant closure. At the beginning of December, 2009, the plant employed about 1950. The new contract slated another 750 of those jobs for termination, while another 250 workers would be on-call to work ‘as needed.’

According to company spokesperson Michael DiMauro, the company is getting closer to the final number. Harley’s First Quarter results revealed that worldwide retail sales of new H-D motorcycles were down 18.2% in comparison to the first quarter of 2009. The domestic market slumped even harder, with sales dropping by 24.3%, also compared to the same 2009 time-frame.

To boot, Harley-Davidson Motor will not be hosting any Open House events at the Company’s York Operations or Kansas City’s Vehicle and Powertrain Operations this fall. They’re even shutting down access to the public. As the Harley newsline states, this is “due to an expanded commitment of event marketing resources to other activities, including events that focus on new demographic markets, as well as the ongoing restructuring activities underway at York.”

More Harley workers are losing their jobs and now they’re canceling opportunities to reach out directly to the people who support the company. Hard times bring about hard decisions. The workers at York had a little heads-up that this day would inevitably come, but it doesn’t change the reality that the unemployment office in York County will be busy Monday morning. When will Harley’s bleeding stop?

...they tell Willie G to retire. The only thing he's good for is dictating new paint schemes. His style concepts that the engineers have to adhere to are so limiting and short sighted.

HD needs fresh designs, better performance and better technology. This may mean that the Screaming Eagle P&A department gets gutted. Buyers want performance off the showroom floor these days. The days of suckering people into buying a bike then shelling out $5000 more to make the bike perform like it should have in the first place is over.

Do this, then HD can tell Keith Wandell to take a hike too as he won't be needed to gut the company until it's a lifeless skeleton. Amazing how huge of a bonus that prick took when he closed Buell for more than it cost to keep it open and laying off 1200 HD employees.
Bob -More bad news July 1, 2010 08:07 AM
Very sorry to hear of more people losing their jobs. But I have to believe if the union didn't exist, people would still have their jobs and HD would be selling more bikes. Pay should be commensurate with what the job entails. Most employees are way overpaid for what they do. Plus there's usually 3 or 4 people doing what 1 person could do if it weren't for a Union allowing them to say "that's not my job."

I'm with Westbie. I'm skilled and I'm marketable. I don't depend on a union to take care of me for life and negotiate a high salary. I can do that myself and I'm paid what I'm worth. Sure I'd like more but I need to earn that with better skills that no one else has. So, it's all on me.

“Unions (ALTHOUGH FLAWED TREMENDOUSLY IN SOME ASPECTS) do provide a quailty of life you'll never experience working for minimum wage at your local Kmart...” There are lots of well paying jobs that are NOT union. Just because the ex-union worker only has the skills to be a Kmart employee does not justify their disproportioned pay while working at the motor company. If you need a union to shelter you from the real world because you are not skilled, educated or experienced enough to get a career in something other than retail then maybe it is a good thing HD axed you. I don’t need a union to provide for me and I am doing alright. If my job went away I would find another one because I am a marketable employee with skills and knowledge not part of a membership that only wants to collect my dues so they can use the money to support corrupt political candidates.

Thats right! Down with the Unions! Only the CEO's and upper level managers and lawyers deserve to be able to afford sending their kids to college. Protect the rich, Protect the rich! They are looking out for us, just ask Wall Street. Protect the upper class at all cost! It helps all of us. Keep those work a day stiffs in there place.
Gerry -Get what you want June 28, 2010 11:43 AM
In regards to H-D, they do have their own issues and are struggling to find a foot hold in the younger generation. I will buy what I want, which is an H-D. Then maybe a super sport to park beside it.

You're not much of a guru if you don't even know the basics. The transmissions are one of the best parts of current twin cams. While they are admittedly a bit noisy they do shift very well, probably a little better than my 05' ZX10. Just like most Harley bashers, your opinions are based on ignorance.

Harley to go hip-hop? A 50 cent JayZ jiggy jiggy low rider? God say it isn't so.

harley needs to bring their bikes up to the technology level that the japanese are at dont get me wrong i own a buellxb9 and a harley but for the price of their road bikes you can buy a hell of a nice jap cruiser with watercooling and a whole lot better transmission so when i went looking for a cruiser recently i picked up a used 1500 kawasaki vulcan classic and am amazed by the smoothness of this bike the way the economy is now people just wont pay 25 grand for a bike when they dont know if they will have a job next month.
Fred -Factory Tours June 27, 2010 02:06 PM
Does this mean that theres no more factory tours? One of the only things I like about the motor company is here factory tours and how well they do them.
lou -H D June 27, 2010 05:16 AM
nobody should be happy to see others get laid off,we are all motorcyclist regardless of brand!!but Harley chose not to change with the times.I have owned six,i will not buy another until they change and that includes the pricing of the product.Well i guess Mr Buell got the last laugh!!!he will have more success in the future when Harley takes his collar off!!!!!!
Nathan -Strange reactions June 27, 2010 02:52 AM
I'm honestly surprised at the glee over others loosing their jobs, this seems rather perverse to me. Are these people over payed union hacks? Probably. Are they fellow Americans with family's that are no longer paying into the system? Most definitely. We are ALL in serious trouble, some need to wake up and understand this.
Allen -Union June 27, 2010 12:08 AM
Greed is everywhere and anywhere. But the union's sole existance in the modern era is to rape companies for all they can get in terms of money and benefits. The union used to be about the good of the worker, when there were many dangerous jobs and few laws to protect the workers, but those days have come and gone a long, long time ago. Some union jobs SHOULD be minimum wage. Very, very few of them actually deserve the high pay rate. And even lots of union members will tell you that the union protects the weak - the slackers who underperform.
Jay -york employee June 26, 2010 03:45 PM
Well said sir. The Union does need to die along with affermitative active and all that other BS. Unions are just filled with lazy mfers that know they wont be fired.
Allen -Greed is not a Union Exclusive June 26, 2010 05:14 AM
Funny. Without unions only the frosting on the cake would get rich. Unions (ALTHOUGH FLAWED TREMENDOUSLY IN SOME ASPECTS) do provide a quailty of life you'll never experience working for minimum wage at your local Kmart... As for Harley D., they've sealed their own fate through missing the mark and aiming for the "48" crowd, just like when all the jocks thought the Beastie Boys where the hottest new "punk" band! Not exactly.
Tim B -York Employee June 25, 2010 10:43 PM
"this time at the expense of 200 union production workers" That bit of info makes me smile! I am so anti-union it's not even funny. These people are overpaid and underworked which is the complete opposite of most of the other people in this country. The union has no place in the modern day economy. The union and its members' relentless greed is what's causing them to lose jobs and not management. For once I am on Harley's side. Go Harley! Screw the union over!
York Employee -Now for the rest of the story! June 25, 2010 07:09 PM
The people being laid off were given their notices last friday, june 18. Many made plans, canceled summer day-care, etc. On thursday, June 24, the wonderful management team that is Harley Davidson, decided they cut too deep and canceled the lay-offs of 45 people. While in the grand scheme of things, this is a good thing, imagine being one of these people whose life keeps getting turned upside down. If there was ever a question of whether or not management knows what theyre doing, they just answered it
