Motorcycle Sales Down First Quarter 2010

Tuesday, May 25, 2010
First quarter motorcycle sales data from the Motorcycle Industry Council shows a 22.7% drop compared to 2009. The estimated sales figures, compiled by the MIC from participating manufacturers, show a drop across all segments for the first three months of 2010.

Motorcycle Industry Council
Total motorcycles sales through March 2010 are estimated at 152,431 units, compared to the 197,249 units sold in Q1 for 2009. This 22.7% decline extends the trend of downward sales tied to the national economic woes. By way of comparison, the 2009 numbers were themselves a 31.7% drop from 2008 sales for the same quarter (288,597 units). In other words, within a two year span the market has essentially been cut to half its former form.

There are positive trends, however. While January and February numbers recorded respectively dismal sales drops of 39.7 and 33.7%, the totals for March show a much less dramatic drop of only 5.6%. While the March data indicates a positive trend, it could also be interpreted that the US motorcycle market has still yet to hit the bottom.

Breaking out by segments, the Dual-sport segment fared the best, with a mere 11.8% drop from comparable 2009 numbers. Off-Highway sales recorded a 20.6% drop from ’09 for Q1. On the plus side, for the month of March off-highway sales recorded a 7.6% increase from the year prior, the Dual category also bragging a modest .02% increase in sales for the month – the only two stats in the MIC report, it seems, that doesn’t have a minus sign in front of them! As for ATVs the four-wheelers were down 25.6% from last year.

On the streets, On-Highway, the largest segment which includes cruisers and all other road bikes, was down 21.6%. Only 66,322 units were sold during Q1, compared to 84,576 in 2009 (116,316 for 2008). Scooter sales, which plummeted by 59% in 2009 as a whole, dropped still further for Q1 in 2010, down 21.5%.

$35 fot 2 weeks was crazy, got thinner every week. Craigslist is free! They would run the same add 3-4 times just for filler. Make it $20 until your bike sells. The thing would be 2 inches thick. I was down to buying every 2-3 weeks. Mostly dealers, choppers (most %70 below build cost, ie: cost $35,000 to build, sacrifice $12k or best offer) and pages and pages of HD.

Online is fine, but you cannot take it in the "reading room" if you know what I mean.

I once bought a nice 2002 3 cylinder Triumph Thunderbird, not running but very clean for $3k. I miss those types of grabs. The bikes you dont know you need until you see the add!

Oh, the T bird. All it needed was plug wires and I was off. Since they were back ordered from UK, I build a set out of VW beetle ones I had in the shop. Sold it to a guy in Canada.

Zippy- the cycle trader mag is gone in most areas but the online site is still there. Much better way than the mag to compare local area prices.

I will agree the prices of bikes have gotten out of hand. Where are all these cheap bikes so far everything I looked at in TX is still $600-$800 over MSRP and the used ones are beat to hell.
TG -Buyer Confidence  May 26, 2010 01:17 PM
Buyers just don't have confidence in the economy, their job, their portfolio, in anything right now. Even the qualified buyers who want bikes are holding off because of the constant onslaught of economy woes (media and otherwise). This is despite the opportunities to be had. Contraty to what John from Booklyn believes, I've been seeing rates well below mortgage rates for quite some time (Honda has 0.99% financing available, Yamaha has 1.99%, Kawasaki has 4.99%, Suzuki is at 1.99% presently, much less even Credit Unions are playing in the sub 5% market). Add to that the distressed inventory levels, dealers are panic selling left and right. It's the perfect time to be a motorcycle buyer, the question is why wait. This is like the home buyer tax credit that just expired; only it hasn't expired - and won't until dealers clear up the old inventory (and it wasn't subsidized by taxpayers).
John from Brooklyn -Reasons bike sales are down.  May 26, 2010 08:25 AM
Motorcycles sales are down for a few reasons. One being the economy and not too many people have that extra income to spend on a bike.

Also, the prices of bikes is getting a little bit crazy. 600CC sportbikes for 5 figures. 10K plus.

Another reason I believe is the finacing available on bikes is out of hand too. Unless a company is looking tp get rid of their leftovers the rate is 8% or more.
gb -right on the money  May 26, 2010 07:01 AM
zip, why buy a 10 when there are 07-09 sitting there collecting dust.
Zippy -that is...  May 25, 2010 07:56 PM
...that is if you can find a dealer that has not folded!
Zippy -No reason  May 25, 2010 07:54 PM
Plenty of 07-09 leftovers and slightly used/repo's at smoking low prices. Absolutely no reason to pay these super inflated prices. Big baggers star at $15 large! What are they smokin?

I was buiyng the cycle trader every week to whatch the price trends (they just folded that in my area) 30-40% depreciation/year is common on most bikes these days. HD and Euro bikes are holding up better. JapScrap is dropping fast. You can find 2 year old $12k-$15k low mile metrics for $5k-$8k all day long.
FND -no surprise  May 25, 2010 05:53 PM
I'm not surprised that sales are down. The dollar is still weak, the stock market is like a rollercoaster, and now Europe is in turmoil with their economy which doesn't help us. Factor that all in and who wants to pay $8000+ for a new bike, and who can afford it, not many people I'm friends with can. They are all going used used used.
irksome -...  May 25, 2010 05:41 PM
I'm just sayin'...
irksome -and yet...  May 25, 2010 05:40 PM
Triumph Motorcycles posted a 9% increase in sales for April 2010 as compared to 2009.
JC -The only positive...  May 25, 2010 02:40 PM
Ya! Go March-saled dirt bikes and dual sports! Show the rest of those categories what's up.
