Alpinestars Urban DNS Pants Review

Alpinestars Urban DNS Pants
Alpinestars' DNS treatment is applied to the inside and outside of the Urban Pants.
I’ve never been a fan of leather pants. I understand that they are the ultimate in protection, but to me they just look silly on the street. Anytime I’ve tried to rock a pair, I feel like an extra in a bad 80’s rock video. The look just isn’t for me. Luckily for me and my non-leather pant style there are plenty of other options. This past week I had a chance to sample a pair of Alpinestars Urban DNS Pants during a hot desert riding session at the 2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 First Ride.

Constructed from a lightweight, abrasion resistant 100% brushed soft cotton twill the pant features Dual Nano System(DNS) technology that repels water. The DNS treatment is applied to the inside and outside of the pant to bolster wind and water resistance. A inner mesh lining has internal knee pockets for Alpinestars’ Smart protection inserts, while the the seat area is reinforced. They are available in any color as long as it’s black.

Being black and water resistant I was expecting to slowly cook in the Urban pant, but I was pleasantly surprised. The moisture wicking capabilities kept me dry and cool while riding. Even when siting in the traffic at near triple digit temperatures, the pants were the least stifling piece of protective clothing I was wearing. The climate control of these pants is impressive.

The waist is very true to size, but the rest of the pant to loose cut and roomy. There is plenty of room for boots under the cuff for even the most bulbous of boots. An articulated leg panel construction allows for a perfect fit while seated but at the same time doesn’t look silly walking around town. I would venture to say these could be the perfect pants for riding to work at the office and for nights out on the town.

The crossplane crank and uneven firing order of the 2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 makes putting the power to the ground easy.
Alpinestars' Urban DNS Pants are a stylish option for those riders who are looking for a simple pair of pants that protect.
The only gripe I had was that the front pockets, although deep, didn’t offer much security for items like a cell phone while riding. Although nothing fell out, it felt that if I wasn’t careful my phone could easily become roadkill. The rear pockets are uber-secure with zippers and a velcro flap.

In all, the Alpinestars Urban DNS Pants are a great option for those riders such as myself that just can’t see themselves in leather pants but are looking for protection greater than a pair of blue jeans. The look is modern; the fit is top notch, and the protection from the elements and asphalt is there when you need it.

The Alpinestars Urban DNS Pants are available from the Motorcycle Superstore in sizes 28-38 for $159.95.
