SHIFT Woody Fur-Lined Hoody Review

SHIFT Woody Hoody
I packed light on my recent trip to Cincinnati. As luck would have it, a monster snowstorm blew in. Fortunately, SHIFT's Woody Fur-Lined Hoody kept me from turning blue.
SHIFT Woody Hoody
My recent trip to Cincinnati for the Easyriders V-Twin Expo coincided with the arrival of ‘Snowmageddon’ on the East Coast. I booked a room downtown so that I could walk everywhere I needed to go, but didn’t bring any real cold weather gear, per se. The snowflakes were wet and heavy and the wind blew the furies sideways. Fortunately, my SHIFT Woody Fur Lined Hoody saved me from becoming a frozen fixture on the Cincinnati sidewalks.

The first noticable item about the SHIFT Woody Hoody is its weight. It’s a lot thicker and heavier than standard thin, cotton hoodies, thanks to its heavyweight cotton construction and its fur fleece lining. The fur lining is spread throughout the torso area and hoody but doesn’t extend down the arms. But talk about comfortable. I’m pretty much a leather-wearing guy, so I wasn’t too sure about sporting a fur-lined jacket, but it’s far and away the most comfortable hoody I’ve put on. It’s so comfortable that I keep finding my wife wearing it, even though it’s way too big for her.

The SHIFT Woody Hoody looks sharp, too. I got the brown with a cool woodland camo pattern on it. It’s versatile enough to wear to the office everyday and stylish enough to wear out when you hit the town after a bike show. The SHIFT ‘S’ logo adorns the back of the right shoulder and the left jacket pocket and is hidden inside the camo design, but otherwise the badging is indiscreet.

Living and riding in Oregon means I’ll get a few more months of wear out of the SHIFT Woody Hoody. It’ll be good on cool Spring nights, too. When the wind was howling in Cincinnati, I cinched the hood down tight around my head and was grateful that the fur-lined Woody is warmer than normal and is protective down to temperatures around freezing. Sloppy, wet snowflakes pointed out it’s not waterproof, though. The SHIFT Woody Fur Lined jacket is expensive for a hoody at just under $90, but it’s thick, well-made, and ultra-comfortable. Just check out the beginning of the 2010 Cincinnati V-Twin Expo video to see how warm and toasty I look against the cold of Cincy.

If function over style is more your fashion. A less flamboyant option for a riding hoodie at the same price is the Cortech WP Fleece Hoody. I've had mine for 2 years now and it does an impressive job of keeping out the cold and handling the elements. It's so versatile that I have actually retired my bulky insulated leather jacket for all but the coldest days of the year for my daily commute!

I don't care for the looks of this jacket either, but I have seen people wear much uglier stuff. What I'm really surprised about is that you're reviewing casual clothing. I would much rather see reviews of actual motorcycle clothing.

Unless this thing is 500 times better in person it's hideous! Now I will admit that I'm not a Shift fan, thanks to Jeff Emig riding for them back in the day, but even if I was I wouldn't buy this thing. Fake wood and a fake pine tree air freshener on the inside...whoever made the decision to sell this should be fired. I'm guessing it will be on Shift's "Clearance" section of their website in no time.
