2010 Shoei RF-1100 Helmet

The Shoei RF-1100 replaces the popular RF-1000, which has at times made up to half of all sales for the Japanese manufacturer. The new design features an entirely new shell shape developed for new Snell M2010 standards.
Shoei looks to improve on its reputation for building quiet and comfortable motorcycle helmets with the introduction of its all-new RF-1100 helmet. Replacing the popular RF-1000, which in the past has represented half of Shoei sales, the new RF-1100 takes the middle path between Shoei’s X-11 racing helmet and TZR full touring design. Based off rider and dealer comments, as well as its own exhaustive research, the next generation RF-1100 features a new shell construction, exhaust system, shield and visor mount system.

AIM+ Shell

The RF-1100 AIM+ Shell conforms to Snell M2010 standards – the AIM+ Shell construction moniker a proprietary Shoei technology fusing fiberglass and “organic fibers” for a claimed lighter and stronger shell design. Five different shell sizes are produced for the RF-1100 to conform to the new Snell standards, as stronger shells are required for larger sizes. The multiple shells also accommodate a wide range of helmet sizes, from XXS to XXXL.

The physical shape of the Shoei RF-1100 shell is much different than its predecessor and includes a new spoiler system and exhaust vent locations. The new design was purpose-built, with a new shell forming technology (developed onShoei’s VFX-W motocross helmet) allowing more varied shapes and eliminating a separate spoiler wing altogether. Instead, the spoiler, which reduces lift, is incorporated into the helmet shell shape itself.

The biggest change to the RF-1100's ventilation system is the four top exhaust vents,
which were moved further up on the shell, as wind tunnel testing concluded the
greater negative pressure would improve airflow.
The exhaust ventilation features three intake and six exhaust vents, the airflow travelling through tunnels within the dual-layer EPS liner. The relocation of the top four exhaust vents is because wind tunnel tests revealed the negative pressure suction is greater further up on the helmet than previously thought. Shoei also claims the separation of the spoiler and exhaust vents improve both aerodynamics and ventilation.

QRSA Base Plate System

The upper airflow path of the RF-1100 runs from the front vents, through the EPS liner to the top the head and back through the EPS foam out the re-positioned exhaust vents on the top of the head, rather than the traditionally more rearward exhausts.
Shoei helmets are also renowned for being quieter than many of their rivals. Again, it aims to improve on this trait with its QRSA (Quick Release Self-Adjusting) Base Plate System. The relatively simple attachment and release system makes quick face shield swaps trouble free. Also returning is the convenient preset lever, which can either lock down or crack open one position for increased airflow. The key to the quieter riding claim, however, is the self-adjusting base plate. The spring-loaded system sucks the shield into even contact for a wind- and waterproof seal when closing the visor.

Utilizing the much-hyped QRSA system is a new CW-1 shield, which is taller and wider than its predecessor. Instead of an anti-fog coating, the RF-1100 shield is designed to work with an optional CW-1 Pinlock system.

The RF-1100 comes with all the bells and whistles expected of a premium performance helmet. The interior center and cheek pads come in multiple sizes for optimal fit. The cheek pads alone are available in six different thicknesses. The pads are also removable, washable and replaceable. Eyeglass channels ensure glasses aren’t a hassle under the lid and a chin curtain and breath guard further enhance the comfort factor.

The spring-loaded QRSA base plate is promised to secure the new CW-1 sheild into
position with a firm bead, reducing noise in the RF-1100 design.
Another heralded feature is the neck pad, providing a better seal for wind noise up through the helmet. Combined with the QRSA base plate seal, Shoei is shooting for delivering a quiet ride. How quiet? When one journalist joked about not needing ear plugs at the helmet's press introduction, Shoei Market Manager Bret Milan answered, with only half a smile, “that’s the idea.”

Prices for the new lid range from $400-500 and come with a five-year warranty. Solid colors are the bottom end of the price spectrum, with another $20 for metallic colors and $100 for graphics. Speaking of which, Shoei had some quite fetching new graphic designs available. We left the introduction with an attractive blue, white and grey configuration.

So how does the new RF1100 feel in the saddle? Well, looks like we have a good excuse to go for a ride! Stay tuned to Motorcycle USA for a full Shoei RF1100 Helmet Review.

So how long until the Snell foundation changes its mind and its standards again and deems this helmet unsafe? No matter who you side with (DOT, Snell, etc) I think all the controversy PROVES we don't know as much as we think about how to protect the human head. The goverment should throw millions of dollars at this, but they won't because it would save lives of motorcycle riders. We need a biker President!
