O’Neal Racing Tirade Bluetooth Helmet

Thursday, October 21, 2010

The O’Neal Tirade helmet integrates Bluetooth communication technology so you can talk on your mobile phone or listen to music while you ride.
O’Neal Racing has long been known for its line of off-road and motocross gear and apparel. But now the California-based company is expanding into the street bike arena with its O’Neal Racing Tirade Bluetooth Helmet. This full face road helmet fully integrates wireless Bluetooth communication which enables use of Bluetooth capable devices such as cell phones, MP3 players, GPS, intercom, and anything else that is compatible.

The exterior shell is comprised of a mixed fiberglass and composites and comes in three different shell sizes based on the size of the helmet (XS-XXL). It is available in four colors (Black, Flat Black, Silver and White) and is DOT and ECE approved. The interior of the helmet is removable for easier cleaning. Ventilation ducts atop and in the mouth and forehead areas reduce the chance of the face shield fogging up as well as providing fresh air. The face shield can be removed or swapped out using the quick-release system. A total of four face shields are available in chrome, clear (included), light and dark smoke.

Technology-wise, the helmet has multi-directional earphones built into either side of the helmet with a noise cancelling microphone tucked inside the mouth bar. Inside the left side of the helmet there is a small electronic module and a rechargeable battery which powers the entire set-up. There is also an FM radio tuner built-in as well. The various functions can be accessed by using a simple control interface also located on the left side of the helmet.

There aren’t a whole lot of motorcycle helmets on the market that offer untethered communication capabilities like the Tirade helmet so we look forward to getting our hands on one and testing out its capabilities. Stay tuned for the full review.

I've had a helmet with Bluetooth for about 2 years now. For those of you who think it's unsafe, the best way I can explain it to you is "music in a department store"; it's there, you can hear it, but it's not distracting or even noticeable at times. This helmet may be different, but my helmet (V-Can) doesn't have particularly loud sound. It's enough to be heard, but even that's debatable at speeds over 60 MPH. At that point, I really only hear wind and road noise and the beat of the song, at best. And really, at 60 MPH, what real road noise can you actually hear except for a siren or horn? I can hear those things LOUD AND CLEAR, trust me. When I'm over 80 MPH, forget the music, you can't hear it anyway (unless you're lucky enough to be drafting . Maybe this speaks more about how much noise-leak my helmet has than anything else, but the speaker (yes, a single speaker in the left ear only, but this helmet may be different) doesn't exactly pump out high wattage sound either. I think people get the impression that helmets like this provide sound like you might get from inner ear buds, but that's simply not true. I can hear every single road noise I would normally hear, I just have a subtle soundtrack in the background. Ultimately, I wouldn't consider this much different to the sound systems that exist on large touring motorcycles. Is it safe? Yes. Don't dismiss it until you've tried one out yourself.
