Ducati Xerox s Troy Bayliss won both races at Assen and holds a 70-point lead in the championship point standings. - Assen
Ducati Xerox's Troy Bayliss won both races at Assen and holds a 70-point lead in the championship point standings.
A 48-point lead in the World Superbike Championship wasn't good enough for Troy Bayliss. The two-time SBK champ furthered his lead in the 2008 points tally and tried to break the will of his title foes with a dominating double-victory performance Sunday at Assen. Beginning both races from the front, via his 20th career Superpole-winning lap yesterday, Bayliss made good with a pair of wins to extend his lead now to 70.

In Race 1 Bayliss was joined on the podium by Ten Kate Honda rider Carlos Checa and Alstare Suzuki's Max Neukirchner. The two riders had an infamous encounter on the final corner at Valencia's Race 1, but the duo managed to keep the rubber side down this time around and crossed the line two seconds behind the Aussie, but within a tenth of each other. Neukirchner's Alstare teammate, Yukio Kagayama, won a battle over fourth, besting former Suzuki paddock mate Troy Corser.

In the second race, Bayliss again jumped up front, but this time was challenged throughout by Yamaha's Noriyuki Haga. Down over 100 points to Bayliss in the title, Nitro Nori was gunning for glory and the win, but came up 0.082 short in Race 2. Crossing the line for the final rostrum spot was Checa, who now has three straight podiums to his credit. Go Eleven Ducati's Ruben Xaus finished fourth, with Neukirchner rounding out the top 5.

With a remarkable 70-point gap on the now second-place Checa in the title hunt, Bayliss celebrates his last race at Assen in the best way imaginable.

"I'm very happy of course, it's been an incredible weekend," said the 39-year-old. "This is the last time I'll race Superbikes here at Assen. It's perfect in that the first time I raced at this track I had a big battle with Nori and now again here this year. That first year he won and so it's fitting that in my last visit here, this time I was able to beat him. We've been going well all weekend and were able to take pole and then I made a really good start in both races. I think I'm riding for the best team in the paddock at the moment so I thank my guys, the Ducati Xerox Team, again for their hard work, and we go to Monza with 50 extra points in the bag."
Yamaha Motor Italia s Noriyuki Haga went down in Race 1 after an incident with Ruben Xaus. - Assen
Yamaha Motor Italia's Noriyuki Haga (41) went down in Race 1 after an incident with Ruben Xaus. He rebounded and gave Bayliss (21) some hell before finishing 2nd in Race 2.

Checa moves up in the points via his double podium performance to 108, with Troy Corser taking over third at 89. Fonsi Nieto, who had a disappointing DNF and 11th-place result drops from second down to a 85-point fourth. Xaus rounds out the top 5 in the points with 81.
