took another step forward in his dual championship ambitions with another perfect result in Sunday's 17-lap Superstock race. The Suzuki rider was joined on the podium by M4 EMGO Suzuki's Geoff May
and Yamaha's Eric Bostrom
It was another perfect round for Ben Spies in Superstock, with the Yoshimura Suzuki ace getting pole position, most laps led, and the win.
Spies started from pole position in the 17-lap Superstock race, but it was M4 EMGO Suzuki's Geoff May who snaked the holeshot. Coming around for the first lap, May owned the lead followed by Aaron Yates, Ben Spies, and Jake Holden. Right after the first lap, however, Holden went off track in a single-bike incident. By the second lap, Holden's Jordan Suzuki teammate, Aaron Yates, carried the team's podium hopes having passed May for the lead.
At the Lap 5 mark, Yates was fending off the determined charge of Spies with the Texan railing past May for second on Lap 3. As the front three motored on, Ben Bostrom was entangled with Danny Eslick in a battle over fourth, with the Yamaha getting the better of the young Suzuki rider.
On Lap 6 Spies made the move for the lead with Yates three tenths behind. May held a solo third, with Bostrom doing the same in fourth, although creeping up on the Suzuki for the final rostrum position.
Ten laps in Spies had opened up a one-second gap on Yates, who in turn was three seconds up on May. The M4 EMGO rider was himself three seconds up on Bostrom, but by the time it was five-to-go his advantage shrunk to less than a second in lapped traffic.
On Lap 14 Yates went off course, surrendering his second-place position and relegated to an eventual seventh-place result. Yates' misfortune upgraded the May/Bostrom battle for the podium into a battle for second-place.
Able to take it easy on the final laps Spies went unchallenged to the checkers, but May had to fight off a wheel-to-wheel challenge from the California native Bostrom. A last ditch final-turn gambit by Bostrom didn't payoff as he ran a titch wide allowing May to hold on to second.
The win by Spies was his first in Superstock at Infineon and the sixth in his AMA career. The Yoshimura ace extends his championship points lead to a substantial 23, the Texan benefiting from Yate's off-track excursion.
